Poured at Good Friend Beer Garden and Burger House at the Ay Dios Amigos event on 2/23/14. Served in a Lakewood pint glass, reviewed from notes. This is the La Dam du Lac aged 9 months in an Alejandra Tequila barrel, with fresh prickly pear juice added.

Appearance: Dark reddish amber, with a persistent one finger eggshell head. Not much lacing. Visually identical to the version without Prickly Pears.

Smell: Lots of musty tropical fruits, and quite a bit of prickly pears as well. Very sweet tequila, and a prominent alcohol burn in the nose too.

Taste: Close to perfect. If it wasn't for the very boozy alcohol burn, I'd rate this a perfect 5. Prickly pear comes through mostly on the finish, and the tequila is prominent throughout the beer. Almost as if this was a regular La Dam du Lac mixed with a shot of tequila. Lots of malty sweetness, and hints of vanilla, almost in a marshmallow kind of way as the beer warms up. Mild bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Very sticky, with high carbonation and a long, long linger on the palate.

Overall: I was very happy to be able to tell that this beer was aged in different tequila barrels from the other offerings today. The choice of prickly pears was perfect. Could there have been a better fruit to pair with the beer and the barrel? I'd have to think not. It's a shame this is a one-off, hopefully it comes around again. A man can dream.
