Notes/Commercial Description:
We're no monks, but our Belgian-style IPA gives a tip of the hat to our divine brethren. Brewed with rich malt, noble hops, Trappist yeast and a kick of coriander, this is one complex beer. Rather than make a beer that's more of a dare to drink than a pleasure, balance was the priority here. We wanted a beer for "hop heads" and novices alike. Hop Trapp pours with a refined bitter backbone, floral hoppy notes and a decidedly Belgian finish. This brew is worthy of some serious contemplation.

BOTTLE: 12 fl oz. Brown glass, with a branded black pry-off pressure cap.

6.4% ABV per the label. 1.065 OG. 54 IBU. 14 SRM. Reviewed live as a Belgian style IPA. Expectations are average; I'm not well acquainted with this brewery.

Served cold into a pilsner glass. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Four fingers wide. Off-white/pale khaki colour. Nice creaminess and thickness. Good - ~7-9 minute - retention. Nice foaminess and frothiness. Soft-looking.

Lacing:

BODY: Clear copper gold of average vibrance. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. Translucent.

Appears well-carbonated.

Overall, it's a decent looking Belgian style IPA. Nothing stands out; it's not unique or special. We've seen this before.

AROMA: The fruity Belgian yeast is a scene stealer, and works well with the faint coriander, floral hop notes, and faint toasted malt. Consulting the label, I notice they used Trappist yeast - bingo. Great ingredient choice. Perfect yeast attenuation leaves this aroma ideally dry and simultaneously sweet, with marvelous floral hops allowed to shine in addition to a kiss of pine. Lightly grassy, with a kiss of orange, clove, and biscuity yeasty spice. Soft ale esters are an additional highlight.

This pleasant inviting aroma suggests a complex beer with plenty of subtlety. Trappist yeast was a great call.

No overt alcohol or other off-notes are detectable.

TASTE/TEXTURE: Has a definite Belgian character - especially on the slightly more dry finish. Attenuation is perfect; this is neither too sweet nor too bitter. Boasts subtly executed notes of orange peel and clove - which are complemented gorgeously by the subtle yeasty spiciness. I dig the floral hop notes and the kiss of pine, both of which are nuanced. There's a hint of a tea-like herbal bitterness, which is executed subtly enough that it contributes to the natural cohesion of the flavour profile. Has an extremely subtle plum note - probably from the yeast (it's akin to what you'd expect to find in a dubbel or quadrupel, only much less intense).

Well built and nicely balanced, though it does have a shallow depth of flavour. Flavour duration is average, but flavour intensity is below average for the style. It's got enough complexity to keep the discerning drinker interested through one glass, but would be tired halfway into a six-pack. There's plenty of subtlety here, and the Trappist yeast is highlighted to good effect, but it doesn't bring as much flavour and intricacy to the table as the best beers in the style.

Smooth, wet, nicely soft, crisp, well-carbonated, and fairly refreshing. Medium-bodied. A biteen too thick. Overall presence on the palate is nice. This texture suits the taste fairly well, but doesn't feel custom-tailored specifically to it, and doesn't elevate the beer.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, rough, scratchy, or harsh.

No off-notes or overt alcohol can be tasted.

OVERALL: This is a newer style which is still finding its legs. Lakewood has brought out an interesting brew in the style with the right choice of yeast, but the other ingredients in the grain and hop bill do need tweaking. Worth trying once just to see how well Trappist yeast can play with hops, but not recommended for the most discriminating fans of the style. The subtlety of the plum is incredible.
