In summer, Belgians head to the nearest beach, while Texans typically race towards the nearest source of shade. That's because the European sun is far friendlier than the fiery ball glowing over the Lone Star State. Combat the heat with our Zomer Pils. Brewed with Belgian pilsner malt and noble hops, this traditional pilsner is light, crisp, and refreshing. So let that sun keep on burning.

A - Beautiful light golden color with a big thick frothy head that clings to the side of the glass.

S - Smell is a little wanting. Not much there. Honestly, smells like an adjunct lager.

T - Slight bitterness up front. Finishes without much of a punch at all. A little bit of the malt sinks in near the end, but there's almost nothing in the middle.

M - Slick flow on the tongue. The carbonation creates a nice padding.

O - While I've really enjoyed a lot of Lakewood's other offerings, I feel like this is a tad mailed-in. I would drink it again if the options were few and far between. Not a great example of the Czech style.

I've had many lame, bland microbrewed lagers. I've had locally-brewed ones that I wanted to love and that I kept drinking--indeed, that I even recommended to others--despite my better judgement.

This is not that sort of lager. Zomer Pils is actually awesome.

It looks the part: a fizzy yellow lager. Floral hops dominate the nose. Bottoms up and the proof is in the pudding: a bold, distinctive hop presence in counterpoint with honeyed malt notes. Carbonation level is perfect. There are zero esters or any other sort of fermentation flaws.

It tastes like an import.

If they don't serve Zomer Pils down in West, TX or other towns in Czech-Texan country, I am certain that they will. This is the sort of beer that makes one proud to live where it is brewed.

This was a gift from my son in Texas, a nice pilsner from Lakewood Brewing with an abv of 4.8%. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, it had a fine frothy head, white as Santa's beard, with a trail of lacing as the beer was quaffed. A whiff off the top of the glass revealed a sweet malt smell. The first gulp was all about the malt, followed by a surprising hoppy bitterness. It lasted only seconds before giving way to a clean finish. This beer is intended more for summertime consumption, according to the label, but with it's low abv it was perfect for a work day lunch in the middle of the winter.

This beer is a crystal clear, very light straw color with a small but dense head that persists well. Aroma is light, but the hops are beautifully floral, exactly the small one expects in the style. The taste as well is hop-dominated, floral, slightly herbal, with a nice high bitterness. Malt is detectable but not a major component. Light, dry finish.

A good quaffing beer!
