They should get a zero for their racist and discriminatory beliefs and actions. This is probably a great place to buy wine unless you are African American, this store treats African Americans like thieves and criminals. I had never been treated so poorly until this new ownership has come in. The people there don't even hide their racism as they are quite blatant in the way they follow and harass people of color once they enter the store.

Two months ago I entered their store to buy some alcohol for friends that were coming into town for my wedding. the woman working there seemed unwilling or unable to answer my questions and she kept brushing me off. I started to walk to the back of the store to browse and I turned to see her pointing me out to two men that had just come out of some back room. The men proceeded to follow me the rest of the time I was in the store, never more than ten feet away. On Sunday, September the 27, 2015 my wife and I entered the store to purchase a bottle of wine to have with dinner and things went bad immediately. It ended with two people watching me from down two different aisles as I tried to shop. When I had had enough I confronted one of the men and asked him what his problem was with me and his response in extremely broken English was "I work here, I can follow you if I want" Fortunately my wife was there with me because she absolutely saved him from great bodily harm, high medical bills and the inability to eat solid food.

I am surprised that the town of Brookline would allow a store to exist in its borders that treats a portion of the population so badly. All of my life I have dealt with racism, I didn't think that I would have to deal with it from people from a foreign country in the place I live and then to have people in the community support them. The owners of this store are terrible people and it is my duty to let everyone know so that others are harassed and hurt by them.

1 big tip for everyone. Do not be black if you want to buy alcohol from this store. This is my new favorite place to be followed and harassed in. We got there just in time for a new case of racism to make its way to the shelves. Discrimination at its finest and a good vintage. Just get there early because on a weekend it can get quite busy and they may run out of hate.

Seriously though if you are black you are not welcome. They will talk about you, they will follow you, they will hate you!!!

I have been living a few blocks from this place and been going regularly for the past year and a half, but I have to rain on this parade. Yes, this place has a few knowledgeable staff members that are quick to ask you what you're looking for and suggest similar beers (and up-sell you to the special releases). They also have free tastings of stuff on Thursdays so you can get a half shot of vodka while you peruse the craft selection.

BUT, they gouge, and especially gouge on limited releases.

I put up with an extra dollar or two per bomber for a while given my proximity and the selection, but the nail in the coffin was the BCBS release. I was out of town Thanksgiving weekend, so when I got back on Monday I called a dozen or so liquor stores inquiring about BCBS availability and prices. Every store EXCEPT this one was in the $6-7 per bottle range (for regular), or $24-26ish per 4-pack. Here, they asked for $8.95 PER bottle, with a one bottle limit.

FUCK THAT, I'm out and never to return again. Coolidge Corner Wines has a decent selection and you should just make the trip to Blanchard's if you can't find what you want there.

NB I have also seen dusty-ass IPAs and DIPAs 6+ mos after the bottling/canning dates. Tsk tsk.

From the outside it doesn't look like much, nor does the front of the store. But the back room is chock full of a wide selection of craft beers, including many rarities. The staff is knowledgable and has introduced me to some terrific beers i was totally unfamiliar with, especially out of state craft beers. It's a fun place to browse around.

My new favorite shop in the Brookline/Allston area. Have been to pretty much every other place in the area except this place for some unknown reason. First off, the selection is excellent, with tons of rarities and limited releases. I spent a good 15 minutes looking around trying to narrow in to what I was in the mood for. But better than the selection was the service. Insightful and helpful, they seemed eager to point me in the right direction. Better yet, they were keen on telling me when knew limited stuff was coming in, or what to keep my eyes open for in the next few weeks. Definitely happy to have found this place, and will be frequenting it.

recently discovered this place despite living in Brookline for the past several years, and wow what a diamond in the rough. it's easy to see how it can be overlooked by a craft aficionado, what with the look and feel of a vaguely bedraggled neighborhood corner store - the kind you might run to in a pinch when you're out of toilet paper or your wife needs evaporated milk for a recipe. the "and liquor" part I took to be an afterthought, like maybe they offered a limited selection of booze defined by macros and second-rate spirits. wrong. when I walked in and the first thing I saw was boulevard's love child no.3, I did a double take. limited space but an impressive selection, 4 and 6 packs to bombers and onward to various Belgian offerings. from local brewers to the big national names, your shelf staples are well accounted for, but there's also a hearty handful of some of the more uncommon beers, one-offs and limited releases. it's no Julio's or Marty's perhaps, but if you live in the area? Bay State is a big time asset.

*the beer manager was not present at the time, so I can't comment on service. guys at the register were friendly enough but spoke limited English and expressed no knowledge about beer.

**update: upping my 'service' score, as the last few times I dropped by the beer manager was in... each time he approached me right away to ask if I was looking for anything in particular and made some excellent suggestions about some beers they had just received.

Located right on Beacon Street between Washington Square and Coolidge Corner, Baystate somehow nevertheless flies under the radar a bit here in Brookline. Drew is one of the more helpful, knowledgeable beer buyers I've encountered -- he'll always take the time to say hello and show you what's new at the store, and I find that his recommendations are nearly always on-point. The team has drastically improved the craft selection at Baystate in recent months. I rarely find myself going anywhere else these days.
