a collaboration with dogfish head, i suppose its an unlikely collaboration, but with the new place behind the brewery thats so focused on dogfish beers, it makes a little sense. this is a rye weiss type beer, with a pinch of cocoa. its perfect for fall because it has a lot of body, its proteiny and big feeling, textured boldly by the wheat, and intensely grainy, autumnal, and harvest time feeling with the spice of freshness of the rye malt in there too. the cocoa is more of an accent thing, but it provides bitterness in the place of hops, and sort of serves to extend the rye going on here, giving it a longer platform, its not a flash but a permanent flavor in this beer. the yeast is interesting, hefeweizen type, but less fruity, maybe fermented a little cooler? or maybe just overtaken a bit by the rye and cocoa. in any event, its a really clever beer, infinitely drinkable, refreshing and hearty at the same time, and i think perfect for fall. tradition meets innovation, and the execution is spot on. one of the more interesting fall beers i have had this year. if they packaged it, i would but it for sure. well worth seeking out.
