The "Ten of Clubs" is a dark ale with a hint of anise and loads of character. Some may call it "Abbey-style," but we just think of it as great beer.

Aged in oak barrels and brewed from an original recipe by Het Nest - a group of friends making excellent craftbeer to promote the Flemish town of Turnhout Belgium - the world wide center of the playing card.

Too much anise for my taste. Couldn't finish a glass.

This beer nearly killed me! (Ok, I exaggerate a bit.) it was VERY active when opened and I tried to stem the flow by drinking some!

What was left was pretty good! Rich dark reddish brown color with with good head and lacing. Dark berries and some anise spice smell and taste. A bit of dark chocolate too. A pity more was not saved. I am enjoying what is left.

L: Poured from a stubby bottle to a goblet. Had a dark, mahogany brown color and a thick, cloudy consistency. There was a half inch of creamy, off white, fairly long-lasting head. Not a whole lot of lacing, though.

S: A pretty good, but not great aroma of dark fruit, caramel, malt, and licorice.

T: Tasted of a tinge of caramel (sweet, but not cloyingly so), some light licorice notes (not a huge factor), a good amount of malt (a solid backbone), and a bit of dark fruit (raisins, in particular). Like the aroma, this is a solid flavor, but not as dynamic as you'd hope. Needed a bit more oomph. Still, not bad.

F: A well-carbonated beer with a sharp finish. Medium-bodied.

O: An uneven beer, but one with some good qualities. Worth a try.

Pours out with a lovely full mocha/red-coloured head, beer is pretty opaque with a tinge of mahogany. Great head retention right from the get go, and it stuck around. Beer looks great.

So, the aroma reminds me of a mix between an imperial stout and a quad, which is funny, because I have seen this beer listed as BOTH scanning through the internet. Even the official website is somewhat ambiguous about just what style this is supposed to be.

Aroma has some nice chocolate, sweet malt, like an imperial stout, but also some yeasty funk which makes me think of a quad. I get plenty of licorice in the aroma, I can definitely smell the anise. Mild coffee, some lactic hits, and raisins and dates. Nice.

Taste follows up on the aroma. A bit of yeast funk, plenty of chocolate milk and licorice, along with a very slight, dusty note of the hopping, but it is definitely on the sweet side. Mouthfeel is great--really silky smooth and full. A red-wine finish almost, a tiny bit of sourness and plenty of yeasty funk. The 10% alcohol is almost impossible to detect--it doesn't even SMELL boozy. Hey, tastes great man.

Good stuff from a brewery I wasn't aware of before today.

Day 14 of the 2019 Advent Calendar.

A spectacular beer, which I doubt will be surpassed by any others in this same calendar.
Opaque brown in color, a little (tan) head remains after the first pour.
Chocolate and malt flavor but not excessively sweet. There's a certain fruitiness as well but nothing cloying.
There must be hops doing a balancing act, but very little hop flavor. It's t he perfect marriage of malt and hops.
10% ABV and it goes down like water on a hot day. Brilliant!

Dark ruby body with a frothy head.

Licorice and alcohol nose, slight coffee.

Flavor is horrible. Lots of alcohol, anise, followed by pure NyQuil. That green stuff.

Feel...hot, boozy, semi dry.

Overall one of the most awful beers I've ever tasted. I don't like taking medicine unless I have to. Drain pour, here.
