Deep hazy amber that glows orange in the light. John Hammond could build dinosaurs from this brew (EDIT: quick image search reveals that the amber he used was significantly lighter coloured than I remembered. This is not that amber! But I'm going to keep the allusion because I like it). Foamy finger of head settles down into a nice little white picket fence on several acres. The fence is the lacing and the halo. The acres are the residual layer left on top. Basically, this is what you want your IIPA to look like.

Nose is decidedly sweet. Caramel/honey predominates, with some sweet floral and tropical hops, though not really fully committing to any of that direction. Maybe a bit of pine a bit of grass and something like soap perhaps? I really like IPAs with a sweet backdrop, so this works for me. Many people do not, so YMMV.

The sweet notes take a backseat on the flavour letting the pine play the front. There's not as much depth and layering here as I had hoped/I've become accustomed to with their stuff. There's an overaching strongly bitter catwalk which brings that pine and some citrus, and a support network of that aggressively sweet malt backbone. These are components that I like individually, but I feel like there's a missing link in the fossil record: they're just disparate enough to need a little more of... something to bridge the gap.
The finish brings this clash to the forefront as the dominant notes I mention both carry through: strictly bitter and candi sweet tripping over one another to carry the train. Medium body, fairly creamy, but also shows the alcohol a little more than I like in my big IPAs. Bottom line it's a good beer, but not quite as great as I was hoping/expecting based on the (absolutely earned/deserved) reputation Reuben's has for churning out top flight tipple.

Appearance: Arrives with a clear amber color topped by a foamy head the leaves quite a few dots and shards

Smell: Passion fruit, pine and caramel

Taste: Caramel backbone established, up front, and then the piney hops take over, bringing passion fruit, as well; the caramel sweetness linger into the finish underpinning the bitter flavors

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A nice DIPA though the backbone is a bit sweeter than I prefer

Poured into a Reuben's Brew pint glass. Pours a medium coppery amber with a two finger off-white head with good retention and lots of lacing. Nice aroma of caramel malt, tropical fruit, orange citrus and light piney hops. Flavor is pine and citrus hops, citrus rind, rich tropical and orange family citus, full flavored and well balanced; long lingering piney hop flavor and bitterness. Medium bodied with some creaminess, nice mouth feel. A intensely flavored malty and fruit flavored IPA that also packs a piney hop punch. Well balanced and nicely made, like the other ales from this brewery.
