Bottle (2013)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, FalconA!

Dark ruby and brown with a moderately-sized dark-brown head. Somewhat sticky. Spotted lace down the glass.

Malty sweet bread, banana, a touch of chocolate, and some smoke in the aroma.

The flavor is a bit more banana-forward than the aroma, along with mild chocolate and smoke. A bit of a rye bread character.

Medium bodied with lower carbonation. A bit watery.

I'm unfamiliar with the style, but this one seemed enjoyable enough.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Clear deep copper. Light wisps and thin collar.

Smell - Belgian smelling, if I had to guess a yeast. Lots of spice. Clove. Faint rye spice, too.

Taste - Right up front, the yeast is strong. Banana. Then the rye takes over. The clove and spice comes back in the finish. Eh.

Mouthfeel - Overcarbonated. Spicy. Medium body. Sharp finish.

Overall - All over the place. Individual flavors are interesting but doesn't work at all together.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a reddish coppery amber with a thin head that dissipates quickly to a thin film and ring around the glass. Aroma of wheat, banana, cloves with a hint of sourness. Flavor is mild wheat with a mild rye sourness with light cloves and hints of banana. Light bodied with better carbonation than the head indicated. This is exactly the way I would have expected a rye hefeweizen taste. I have never had a roggenbier from its native home, but this is what I would expect. A nice refreshing change of pace light ale. One of three rye beers from this brewery that were just released and I'll be trying over the next week. Glad to see more rye styles available.

22 ounce bottle poured into a Unibroue tulip. Thanks Cheesemoose! Minimal head, some clear, oily lacing. Murky brown body. Aroma includes caramel, overripe banana, brown sugar. Taste follows suit with a little spice not on the back end and maybe a touch of smoke. New style for me, very interesting and quite tasty actually. I would think this would be extremely drinkable to most people, particularly those who like a nice dunkelweisse-like flavor.

A - Pours a reddish-light brown with a small tan silky head.

S - Malty and lots of rye with a touch of smoke.

T - Same as the nose. Nice.

D - Good carbonation with a heavier than expected body.

O - Rye and malt heavy, but a nice change of pace. Solid.

On tap into a 4oz sampler glass @ the brewery. Pours a clear amber w/ a minimal head.

Aroma is mostly banana and clove, some vague spiciness.

Taste follows nose. Overripe banana, clove, and spicy rye malt. Clean and refreshing, like a hefeweizen.

Mouthfeel is soft and balanced, light and crisp. So drinkable.

Overall a great introduction to the roggenbier style. Well-crafted and tasty.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass.

Appearance: medium brown hue with a moderate haze and a strong effervescence. head is a thick finger of pillowy light-tan foam. I rather like it.

Smell: pretty sweet right off the bat, with a rather banana-like character. After that, a rich spice-cake like aroma comes to the fore. I like this take on rye spiciness, though it is a bit on the sweet side.

Taste: less sweet than the aroma, with a lot more bready character. The spiciness is also dialed way down; it's hard to explain the difference in grain character here -- I wouldn't call it stereotypically rye, but it's definitely different from barley or wheat. I actually like how the flavor is toned down a bit from the aroma. Interestingly, this beer gets more appealing in the aftertaste, after the sweetness and first hit of bread hit you. An interesting beer.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good carbonation and concomitant creaminess. Sha bam!

Overall: this beer has a je ne sais quoi that appeals to me, although it also seems like it could be cleaned up a little. I'm not a pro on roggenbiers, but this one seems decent to me.

Served chilled into a fluted tulip.

Pours a nice sable brown color with an inch of tan head that quickly recedes leaving light surface layer and lacing.

Strong aromas of grain and spice.

Strong earthy, grainy flavor with hints of clove and pepper.

Medium bodied with a sweet finish and moderate carbonation. Light, sweet aftertaste.

Had wanted to try this style after reading about it a few months ago. Thanx to Lets Pour for the chance. A very interesting style, I can't wait to try some others and see how they stack up to this one, which was very good.
