There was a time when all dark beers had a smoky flavor. Grains were traditionally roasted over an open flame. Then technology took over. Blank Slate’s Smoked Porter pays homage to those early days. Unlike many traditional smoke beers which are smoked with Beechwood, Fume uses Cherrywood smoked malt which gives this Brown Porter a very refined smoke character with a unique flavor profile.

Pretty decent smoke porter with lots of carbonation and slightly smokey.

It's been in the growler over a week, unopened. Base style is a porter, but rather than using roast malt, the specialty malt was smoked with cherrywood.

Pours a deep brown with clear amber highlights and a dense beige head that lingers, eventually leaving sticky lacing.

Nutty, roasty malt meets cherry and smoke in the initial aroma. That cherry comes through more than anticipated, and the smoke is reminiscent of bbq. Chocolate notes surface late. Fairly complex.

Flavor is initially a hit of cherry and smoke, which disappear fairly quickly, becoming very chocolate dominant mid palate, a touch sweet, but becoming roasty and slightly charred at the finish. Nuttiness dominates the aftertaste. The cherry and smoke notes are more subtle than in the aroma, but some rears its head here and there throughout.

Body is moderate to a touch watery, with carbonation on the low side.

Interesting concept. A good example of a porter, with nice chocolate presence. Smoke and cherry dominate the aroma, but I'd almost rather they linger more in the flavor. Fun experiment.
