On-tap at the Boulder downtown brewpub. An English style IPA so understated hops expected, but this was extreme. Hazy medium grapefruit fruity colour, supposedly East kent hops. Barley-yeast aromas, almost no head.More a malt story, where's the hops?

Haziness graced the liquid, tawny-bronze in hue with a coppery highlight. The head was off-white in color, it was served with a finger of head, and it quickly faded to a soapy cap. There was some minimal spotty lace. Overall, the appearance was very pleasant. Thumbs up.

The nose is hoppy with citrus, cheese, earth and a kiss of lemon and honey. The potency is mild. It does not say “UK IPA” but that is okay. Light maltiness plus there is a smattering of fruit underneath the hops. It really doesn’t say much, specifically. It surely doesn’t say “IPA” to me. Inviting, nevertheless.

The palate is agreeable. There is pronounced malty sweetness with honey, caramel, lightly fruity with a piney-citrus-cheese hop blend that plays nicely with all the other flavors. Long hop bite. Hot. Lazy yet crisp because the malt doesn’t drag on and there is a cutting bite of alcohol. It is a perfect combination with the spicy-hot house salsa. To me this is not a true IPA (UK or USA); it is like a hoppy Pale Ale with a juicy malt backbone. It is very good no matter, why should I try to categorize it.

Healthy medium in body, moderately low carbonation, natural and fitting. The mouthfeel fits this beer very well.

I’d drink this hot mess very often if I could. It really hits the spot… I realize it is not perfect but it is not flawed either. It is what it is. I like it. Sampled at the brewpub.

Appearance: Pours a copper body with a tiny hint of red. Good clarity. It's tan head starts out well and exhibits good retention.

Smell: Good dry-hopped EKG aroma with lots of pine and citrus. Very English in character. A touch of malt hides underneath, barely making it's presence known.

Taste: This beer shows pretty good balance for an IPA. A hefty dose of piney, citrusy hops are kept in check by a solid backbone of a bready, caramelly malt. Finishes hoppy and dry.

Mouthfeel: Soft and smooth, with a medium body. Finishes dry.

Drinkability: This is a solid English-style IPA, with an impressive balance. I could easily drink this again, though I'd prefer to try it from a handpump.

Interesting. I go for the IPA and find a British style on my first beer-venture out west: Deschutes' IPA, and now this dry-hopped Kent Goldings adventure.

The nose was subtle in its hoppiness; very dry-hopped on the almost cheesey side. Also murky horse-barn and lake-y extract malt tastes. Something is wrong here.

I got a few hop burps here and there but I felt like I was fighting against a sea of liquid plastic to get there. A rough first pint at the brewery.

On tap at Mountain Sun (not nitro)
I almost always get their FYIPA for takeout but decided to do
the Illusion Dweller since it had been a long time since having it.

A true amber color with plenty of lacing and a fine light beige head.

Smell is all malt with a bready yeast aroma.

Massively malty, maybe because I'm used to west coast IPAs with dominant floral hoppiness. The malts are complex and you get them in the nose and both sides of the tongue. A nice alcoholic tang at the finish along with the excellent bitter.

This is another winner. I may start alternating between FYIPA and Illusion.

The beer pours a cloudy dark gold color with a 1/2" white head that fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a grainy pale and crystal malt scent along with an English noble hop aroma. The taste is good. It has a nice malty base that boasts of pale and carapils malts along with a dry English bitter finish. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a pretty good IPA. It's mild and easy drinking; a fine sessions beer.

An Engllish IPA, no doubt. Made with Kent hops from the UK. I wonder if this is bitter.
Pours Amberish, 1/2 finger head. A bit thin, yet rocky.
Smells of sweet malt and, yup, that English bitterness. Wow, what a representation of the English ale. Creamy, butterscotch texture and slight taste. Bitter, but not biting. Kinda smooth in places. Would like to see this served a bit warmer. Very nice though.

A bright amber color with nice clarity. Smallish white head, creamy but short lived.

Slightly earthy hop aroma - smells like an English IPA.

Flavor has a nice meld of malt and hops. Maybe less bittering hops and more flavor hops than some. Alcohol evident in the finish. Overall flavor a bit too sweet.

Moderate body and carbonation. Some alcohol warming, but pleasant and not inappropriate.

A warming, not brutally hopped IPA. Malt not buried beneath massive IBUs, making it very enjoyable. However, a bit too sweet (underbittered or underattenuated).

A - Deep golden, orange-like undertones; off-white crags of foam and sticky lace

S - Earthy, spicy, deep, robust hop aroma

T - Hops dominate the flavor profile without being overly bitter; dank, earthy, spicy, sour citrus hop profile; finish is bitter and spicy and reveals its alcohol presence just slightly; dry

M - Smooth from the nitro-pour but still plenty of carbonation; spicy stings on the tongue

D - A nearly sessionable IPA that offers plenty of hop dimension; a treat on nitro

I was not blown out of the water. On the other hand it was a damn good beer that wasn't over hopped which is essential for me in an IPA (unless they can manage to balance it out somehow).
I would recommend getting a taster of it while youre there, doesnt cost anything.
