On tap at the Southern Sun in Boulder. Poured into a pint glass.
Appearance - much clearer than expected, nice white head that leaves impressive lace rings!
Smell - just fantastic! Complex blend of earthy, citrus and floral hops!
Taste - doesn't seem to be a good example of the rye IPA style, but just a great tasting IPA!
Feel - nice medium to light body, some noticeable carbonation and a good amount of hop bitterness!
Overall - a bit pricey, but fresh and can only be found from the source, so worth it!

On tap at Vine Street Pub. Looked sort of light orange but it was dark since I was in the annex. Smells citrusy, earthy, cool. Taste is nice and hoppy, more citrus, juicy. This was not quite as good as vagabond IPA but still good enough that I ordered another one.

On tap at Vine Street Pub.
A - Served in a pint glass. The beer is a hazy golden color with a 3/4 finger white bubbly head. Some retention and lacing.
S - The spiciness of the rye is prevalent. Also hints of hop character with earthy pine and citrus character. Gentle malty sweetness at the end.
T - Similar to the nose with the dominant rye character. Medium bitterness with a pleasant blend of earthy pine and citrus hop character which mesh very nicely with the spice of the rye. Finishes with a lingering bitterness and fruity spice.
M - Medium bodied with good carbonation.
O - Easily the best rye beer I've had. Well balanced and tasty. I could drink this all day long. Highly recommended.

First had: on tap at their brewpub
I like rye beer generally. This one was okay, but not the best I've had, and certainly not the best offering from Mountain Sun. Poured a slightly hazy golden brown, with a small layer of white bubbles for a head. Aroma was not too big, but some earthy, piney hops were detectable, and not much else. Flavor was bready, moderately hopped, earthy, and a bit bland overall, quite frankly. Alcohol was moderately noticeable. Medium-bodied, and a good drink for a session, but I had no desire to get another.

A: A deep amber color with white/soft yellow lacing that sits for a minute or two.
S: Very spicy with a substantial amount of northwest hop aroma backing it up.
T: The rye spice and citrusy hop flavor collide immediately. I picked out some other malt flavors, maybe lighter caramel, not much. Powerful rye and hop bitterness rule this one.
M: Average carbonation but was nice for the style.
D: I would def call this a northwest IPA with rye. Th hops really hit you first followed immediately by that unmistakeable rye spicyness. Balanced and delicious. A good example for someone who wants to try a rye beer but doesnt want that "rough, leathery" flavor that strong rye-centric ales tend to have.
Serving type: on-tap
