Amber color, and slightly cloudy. Smallish white head, tightly bubbled but with fairly poor retention.

Aroma has some caramel maltiness. Possibly a bit of alcohol. Some citrusy hops. Maybe some diacetyl (buttery)

Gentle but significant hop bitterness from the start. Good citrus hop flavor mixing with some buttery malt sweetness. Finish not very dry, and a nice lingering hop flavor.

Medium body and carbonation. Very smooth on the tongue - no hop astringency. A bit of slickness supporting the idea of a hint of diacetyl.

A nice drinking, hopppy Amber APA. Think it could use a bit more malt up front to not be so hop balanced.

Possibly their best brew, enjoyed at the Boulder brewpub. I can see why this is a mainstay. Lacey though minimum head, on a slight amber body. C-aroma and grapefruit taste, towards an IPA in biterness and taste. Very good drinkability, particularly in relation to the rest of their lineup.

On tap at the Vine Street Pub. Slightly cloudy darker amber/orange color with a tannish two finger head. Citrusy hop bitterness with some malty backbone in the aroma. Taste is more malty but the citrusy bitterness persists. Feel is medium bodied with a crisp finish.

Cloudy chestnut with cascading off white head. Great retention and lacing. Aroma was full of citrus and floral hops with some caramel malt. Smooth, medium mouthfeel is accented with a sharp citrus hops. There is a bready and caramel malt backbone that rides the hop wave. All the flavors lingered in the mouth for the aftertaste.
Overall, my favorite Mountain Sun brew--didn't try the nonnitro version, though...

Now this is more like it! After a few stinkers I finally found a beer at the brewery that I could really get down on.

A slightly musk hangs over the major hoppiness here, but is slightly yeasty in a way that is not offensive. This hides a very powerfully malty hop and booze-bomb that goes straight to the liver via nitro. Its quite well balanced going down the hatch but I can't wonder if that's just the leveling influence of the nitro. Its seriously citric in its Cascade hoppiness and it reminded the table of Lost Coast's Indica in a good way.

I found this to be the best house beer.

Poured from quart growler/mason jar.

Amber/yellow appearance with decent head.

Some slight hops - not as strong as their FYI IPA and close to right on for the style.

Taste was good, easy drinker and a solid effort by the brewers but would have liked it a bit hoppier given their description:

"What's in a name? The brewers mantra, "more hops" is taken as far as possible in this beer. A deep amber body balances the bitterness and makes that long day at work seem a distant memory. Just ask for a pint of "the dank!!" This beer is also dry hopped with whole flower and cascade hops.

Bottom line - good beer but doesn't fit their own description - that being said, I'd still drink more.

First had: on nitro at their brewpub

You don't usually see brews like this on nitro, and often they don't quite work. I guess the jury's still out on this one, but I thought it was fine. Poured a reddish-amber with a thick creamy, eggshell head, that retained well and left some nice lacing. Lots of citrus and piney hops in the aroma. Again, lots of hops in the taste, citrus and citrus zest, subdued but sweet caramel malts; kind of bitter in the aftertaste, but not too bad. Medium bodied and quaffable.

My first beer from Mountain Sun and it left a lasting impression. Great dark copper color with a lovely cream colored head. The flowery hop nose was very prominent as I brought the glass to my lips. The flavor was full of hops and slightly overpowered the malt balance. The hop flavor hung on the tongue nicely, but the malt was gone immediately. As explained by the bartender "a heavily hopped pale ale" - his description was pretty accurate, but I could have mistaken this for an IPA.

Pours a hazy, copper color. 1/2 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of hops, hint of citrus, and slight sweet malt. Fits the style of an American Pale Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with a low carbonation level. Tastes of slight hops, hint of citrus, slight sweet malt, hint of grass, and a hint of oatmeal. Overall, great appearance, good feel, and body.

The beer pours a nice dark amber/brown color with a 1/2" offwhite head that fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a nice malty scent that boasts of crystal and roasted malts along with a mild hop aroma. The taste is good also. It has a rich malty core with a dry, bitter hop finish. It boasts of pale, crystal, and roasted malts. It goes down with ease and finishes with a roasted, hoppy aftertaste. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good rinking brew. I like the aroma and flavor; a well rounded, good drinker.

This is a well balanced PA. Hazed dark amber pour with a nice head that laced and kept retention fairly well. Some caramel and slight citrus in the aroma. Seems well balanced thus far.
Taste is spicy up front, with a bit of clove and coriander. Some lemongrass. The malt kicks in mid-way. Caramel and slightly roasted malt come through. the end is quite quick and refreshing. This is a darn good PA with good balance and no over the top hops.

From a sample of six Mountain Sun beers with a wonderful lunch, this brew stood out.

A - The look screams amber/red and the head screams quality ingredients; hazy deep amber; soapy off-white head

S - Dank hop nose with citrus; hints of bready malt base

T - I love hoppy amber/red ales more than any other style, and this one did not disappoint; delicious matching of strong hop flavors met a wonderful, rich malt base that was not overly roasty or chocolate; citrus hops, perfect balance, bright and vibrant hop flavor, bready and caramel malt foundation; hop bitterness lingers

M - Smooth but noticeably carbonated; prickly, cloying, lingering hops

D - Very high drinkability owed to genius balance and big Rocky Mountain hop flavor; very clean tasting and refreshing but "manly"

This is the one beer I tasted from Mountain Sun that I really wanted a growler of, but alas, it was not in the cards... Next stop was Boulder Beer :)
