PIcked up a four-pack of tall boys the other day at Central Market. Hadn't seen this one before and was hopeful, despite not being a huge fan of the Cedar Creek beers overall.

Pours a nice amber brown color. Nothing super special, but pretty when it's held up to the light. Some head after a vigorous pour, but no lace to speak of. The nose is full and strong with Belgian yeast. Lots of banana and clover. Some fig and other dark fruit. The strong presence of alcohol in the nose was unexpected, even at 7% ABV. The taste is way too boozy in my opinion. It's as if they got to a point with the trial brews and just said, "screw it, let's roll with this" without trying to refine it any further. I don't mean to be mean, but it just seems a bit unfinished to me. Really strong alcohol notes in the finish, especially as it warms up a bit. Mouthfeel is sturdy, but the strong alcohol finish leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Overall, this just doesn't do much for me. It's too boozy, and not in a good way. It's not a bad flavor up front, but it doesn't hold up. I know dubbels are supposed to have a stronger feel to them, and are by definition higher in ABV, but most really good examples don't burn in the finish like this one does. Still, I'm glad I tried it. Still waiting for something from Cedar Creek to really impress me, though.

Appearance: Brown glass goes glowing orange amber with back light. Holds a modest cover of tan foam and laces the glass.

Smell: Mild, a bit of boozy raisin and tonic water.

Taste: Grape Popsicle! Black bread with more bruised purple grape esters and a mineral water bitter that slowly comes through the sweet light malt base.

Feel: Gassy, light medium body, watery texture.

Overall: A sweet dubbel, close to a table beer and would complement a meal nicely, particularly something meaty.

Served in a Belgian tulip.

A vigorous pour produces a frothy, light khaki-colored head and scattered lace. The body is dark brown and cloudy. 4.25

Faint dark fruit, caramel malt and some candy-like aroma are in the suppressed nose. It all seems underwhelming. 3

Ahhhh, this taste though, is excellent. Raisin and prune and some tasteful spice lead to slightly toffee-like malts. Some grassy hops emerge on the finish. 3.75

Lighter in body and perhaps more hopped than I expect, but it works and is enjoyable. 3.75

I seem to remember enjoying this more, but it's still good. A solid dubbel.
