From a growler...

Foamy off-white head forms, several fingers deep, forms with moderately vigorous poor. Lacing sticks to glass.

The extra red's "extra," presumably, comes from it's slightly elevated ABV (note: I think the proper ABV is 6.5%--I seem to recall it from the chalkboard at taproom and untappd entry concurs, but not certain enough to just change it...). It drinks like a less potent beer. It's very clear; deep copper, but at edges when tilted takes on a color similar to a marzen--a little bit lighter than I would have expected.

Nose has malt sweetness, light caramel, toasty, and floral/spicy hops that follow in the quaff. A little bit of fruit. **Update: Poured another glass out of the growler next day, and it the nose was bright with 3C-type citrus/pine aroma. Very pleasing. Not sure why I didn't pick this up the first go-round.

There is definite malt body and sweetness, medium-light, finishing somewhat sweet. It balances with floral, spicy hop. Carbonation is soft and bitterness asserts its presence but somewhat meekly.

Overall an easy-drinking beer with round, smooth flavors. The bitterness is restrained, but not to the point where it seems like a flaw.

On tap for the 4th Annual LA Beer Week Beer Festival at Union Station in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear dark red with a foamy khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, and some herbal and earthy hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a mild herbal hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is drinkable but not something I would go after again.

I have a 22 ounce bottle which was purchased at the brewery itself. I hope unlike the Hop O Matic that I don't have a bottle half-full of sediment. On to the beer:

Extra Red indeed. It's so dark in red that it looks almost brown. The head is a half-inch thick, and....oh no....I have a pint poured from the 22 ounce bottle and I have a few traces of sediment. However, it's not the chunkfest I experienced from Hop O Matic. A few smells and I forget that piecemeal problem. The aroma is very malty, similar to an Oktoberfest. There are also good hop notes of citrus and grass, assuring its American identity. Very pleasant to smell.

Tasty too. Sweet and modestly hoppy. There's much toffee, caramel, and toasted malts in this red ale. On the other side is vague citrus, sweet grapefruit, and a kiss of pineapple. One thing it isn't lacking is flavor, as it's there. It's a medium bodied beer with gentle carbonation.

Good hoppiness, even bigger maltiness. If choosing sides, Extra Red I suspect would wow the maltmouths more than the hopheads, as the malt is worked very well.
