Another IPA, another hop pun. This is Ritual's version of the style, which will be consumed from a glass via 22 ounce bottle. On to the beer:

I pour two-thirds of the bottle into my glass, and I already have some floating sediment in the beer's body. The color is orangish brown and is topped with a half-inch of decent head. But those dots of sediment pose an eyesore, which shouldn't be happening after two-thirds a pour of brewery fresh IPA. But it does smell pleasant initially. Zests of citrus, pineapple, kiss of alcohol, and a caramel base brings hope for good things to come. With a little time, I get a big dose of alcohol fumes coming through.

The beer does have a happy baselines of hoppiness. It also has some alcohol cutting through the beer, which is disappointing because the base tastes nice. Not very bitter, fresh tasting hops bring vibrant citrus and tropical fruit notes. The alcohol has a solvent character which disrupts some of the harmony. Decent malt base adding some sweetness. Despite the alcohol, the beer has a somewhat smooth texture and isn't very bitter on the palate.

Hop-O-Matic is acceptable and has potential to be better. Tighening the grip of the alcohol would be a great place to start, something I though I wouldn't type given how well I thought Hellion was.

Color is the typical orange-tinted amber. Looks nice in the tall Maredsous chalice with a nice sticky head. Pleasingly sudsy in the mouth. Not as acidic as lots of other big hop brews, but it has a zing to it.

Warm and malty with a pineapple-orange flavor. Lots of bitter resiny taste after a few sips. This almost tastes like a DIPA with the big malt, but it clocks in at the usual ABV. If you like the maltier style of IPA, this is quite rich but still plenty bitter. Some of the grapefruit taste, but it's all moderated by the warm malt. The aftertaste is fragrant and bitter.

One of the better IPAs from the onslaught of hopped-up brews available from every place with a roof and a tap. From the 22 oz bottle bought at Bine & Vine in San Diego.

Bottle (2013)

Thanks for opening this with me, VaTechHopHead!

A much better than expected IPA. I'd heard early batches of this stuff weren't taken too favorably, so I wasn't exactly thrilled when my friend pulled this one out. That being said, it seems as if they've dialed things in quite a bit. This is a good IPA, though not anywhere in the upper echelon like some of SoCal's other more well known iterations. Good, tropical fruit aromas along with a balanced, moderately bitterly flavor. Decent hop character but not as pungent or expressive as in the aroma along with a little sweetness. I wouldn't seek it out, but it's tasty.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ Seal Beach. Orange color, decent head, looks cool but then again almost all beer looks great to me. Aroma was more fruity than piney and not even quite a citrus fruit but that's ok. Flavor was again hoppy but a strange fruitiness that was not citrus as far as I could tell. I smashed this pretty quickly so it was a decent IPA but after having the Beachwood Hopular Mechanics this fell short and is really not what I am looking for when it comes to a West Coast IPA.
