I haven't reviewed in a long time...lots of good beers out here in SoCal and many are hard to get elsewhere in the country...I'll see if I can keep this up...

Murky, hazy brown appearance. Similar to the color of the brown bomber bottle that it came in, but with some reddish hues showing through. Very little head on the pour, reducing to a ring around the glass with no lacing for me. I do like the "rustic" appearance, although probably not the standard for the style.

Smell is a bit light to me...could be the low carbonation. Some light fruity esters and caramel malts. No hints of the alcohol level. Maybe the slightest green of hops shown through.

The flavor shows much more character. Solid grainy, malt character...starts light as the other flavors coat the mouth and then comes on prominently in the finish after the slight sweetness fades taking with it some light esters. Hops are fairly prominent, offering a little citrus that plays off the sweetness and some floral highlights. Bitterness lingers through until the malty finish. Lacks a little complexity of other barleywines I have had, but still a good beer. Low presence of alcohol is impressive.

Nice full body that coats the mouth well and leaves a little crispness with it. A little too easy to drink...

Overall this is a nice brew. Some nice complexity, but lacks a bit when compared to some other greats. Alcohol presence is very low, some sweetness but finishes with just a biting bitterness and malt presence that makes this one pretty drinkable. I'm going to have check this place out next time I'm up in Redlands!

Cloudy dark coppery color in the tall tulip. Nicer than average foam. A funny musty, woodsy smell. Tangy on the tongue and well carbonated.

The taste is not like most Barleywines I've ever encountered. It's more like some of the really dank IPAs but with the malt dialed up. The one pleasant feature is the caramel malt flavor that sinks quickly into the hop soup. After a touch of sweetness on the lips it turns very dry. The leafy, herbal, bitter mushroom taste is quite dominant. The plentiful hops leave a very bitter aftertaste.

I can't find much to like about this. Even the hop flavor is not something I want to muck up a cheap lager with by mixing with this stuff. From the 22 oz bottle bought at Bine & Vine for eleven bucks.

On tap at Ritual Brewing Company in Redlands, CA.

Thanks to Adrienne for this one.

Pours a murky reddish-orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and tea-like flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice hoppy presence for this American take on the style.

A very nice offering from Ritual. It walk a fine line between English and American style barleywine. The nose comes off as more malt forward. The color is a dark brown meets ruby. Taste brings malt with hints of sweet dried fruit, maybe a bit of date. The hops start to come in and the finish is slightly sweet with a clean earthy hop finish, subtle enough to not scare off English barleywine fans.
