Weigh the Anchor, Hoist the Sails...
colossal waves and lashing winds.
That was the life of the English sailor whose job it was to bring beer to Colonial India. Only with an insane amount of hops and high alcohol content could it withstand the perilous journey. Drunken Sailor IPA brings the adventure and powerful taste into the 21st century...

Same beer as Crew Drunken Sailor. Hazy dark amber color with good three fingers thick head with great retention and leaving laces.
Citrusy aroma with notes of oranges, pine resin, honey and toasted malts.
Likewise, a predominant bold citrus flavor with notes of spices, pine, grapefruits, Cointreau liquor, resin, American yeast, caramels and grapes. Dry aftertaste with a persistent and pleasant bitterness.
Medium body with low carbonation. Alcohol of 6.4% is well hidden.
That was a positive surprise, especially from a German beer. Nice American IPA with a predominant citrus bitter and sweet drive. Very well balanced and not tiresome.

Picked this up at a great beer shop in Darmstadt, Germany, Maruhn Welt der Getränke. Slightly hazy pour with a two finger beige head with great retention and lacing. The nose is malt forward with lots of caramel and brown sugar along with hints of pine, perfumey hops, toffee, and subtle tangerine and grapefruit. The taste is more balanced with pine and resiny hops up front along with hints of tangerine, caramel, brown sugar, and toffee. The mouthfeel is slightly thick and chewy with medium carbonation and a syrupy finish. Overall, a pretty decent, well balanced IPA from an up and coming German craft brewer.

330ml bottle, dubbed 'Crew Republic' here. Strange mix of English and German on the label description, not to mention the rather American-sounding name. Oh, and I choose to submit this under the listing where they at least know how to fucking spell.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, dark copper amber hue, with a shocker (the finger configuration, FYI) of puffy, lazily foamy, and mildly bubbly tan head, which leaves some eroded landform lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of sugary caramel malt, bready toffee nougat, further brown sugar, orange cream, candied grapefruit, subdued pine resin, and leafy, floral hops. The taste is more sweet caramel/toffee/Mars Bar nougat, citrus Creamsicles, a soft acrid pine needle and forest floor bitterness, hints of metallic alcohol, and a mixed grape must fruitiness.

The bubbles are fairly understated, manifesting in a weak-form frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, smooth, and even a tad creamy. It finishes on the sweet side, the malt still holding it over the hops, who, despite their peppy attitude, cannot overcome all that damned sugar.

Is this tasty? Yep. Is this hoppy? Uh, sure. Is this really an American-style IPA? Nah - the heavily sugary leanings lend credence to the idea (mine alone, so far) that being so very far off there in Bavaria, something got lost in translation, and they went and flipped the recipe in their attempt at Yankee Doodle Dandy-ing up their brewing efforts. So, next time, Fritz, or Karl, or whatever, a bit of advice - the hops come first, dummy.

A: Pretty dark for an IPA. Sun tea with an edge of fuzz at the top. Cloudy. Carbonation lines the glass but I don't observe it rising.
S: Heaven in my nose. A beautiful hoppy pine scent with the perfect degree of sweetness. Very similar to Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale.
T: Quite good. For a German IPA, I have to give it 4.5. A smooth, well blended flavor with a nice moderate spiciness. Also celery.
M: Slight sting, medium body.
O: The best German IPA IMHO. So glad to have finally found a wonderful one.

Crew Republic 'Drunken Sailor' @ 6.4% , served from a couple of 330 ml bottles purchased for $ 3.70 each

A-pour is dark gold from the bottle to a hazy amber in the glass with a small off-white head leaving a spotty lace along the pint
