Appearance- Pours up a decent amount of head which seems to have good retention. The head is a light to medium beige while the body is a dark chocolate brown which shows some maroon and crimson when held up to the light. Lacing is pretty much sheeting at this point. With some perforation.
Nose- Very promising- I'm already getting my hopes up. The bottles shows dark, bitter chocolate with a slight hint of coffee while the glass is a bit more complex. Very smooth and rich chocolate with hints of milk and cream that almost suggest vanilla, light toffee. Swirling shows a notion of roasted malts, coffee. Very light touch of oak.
Taste- Starts off a little fruity, slight vinous. Some raisins, a tiny bit of cherry. This moves into some bitter notes: some chocolate but mostly derived from roasted malts, a touch of coffee. Some woodiness hangs around the edges of the palate. Some touches of vanilla and oak. Slight rum sweetness as expressed by the front of the palate. A little too much earwax bitterness at the moment to let the other, more desirable notes have their say. Coffee is very strong as well and while it doesn't have that acrid aftertaste a lot of coffee beers have, it doesn't seem to be the best coffee. Fortunately, the chocolate starts to come out more and balance the bitterness. I wish there was more complexity to this beer but it's still a pretty tasty beer. The vanilla that flits around the edges really helps to smooth out any harsh notes. Oak starts to pop up but it's manageable. Pretty good balance and integration and has more complexity than I was expecting. All and all, a good beer, maybe a little better. Flirts with being really good.
Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with low carbonation. Pretty smooth and creamy. Slightly dry finish. Possibly the highlight of a pretty good beer.
Drinkability- Very easygoing and very accessible. No indication of heat. I think I got this at Grocery Outlet for around 7 bucks, which is quite reasonable. If it weren't already so balanced, I would think of getting one to age. But I might get another to drink.
Overall- Good beer that has inclinations toward being a really good beer. I'm delighted that I like such an extremely local beer. This is definitely worth a try. It may have started off like a brown ale but it is nothing like one. Great mouthfeel and a nice surprise.
