Beaumont Bock is named either for a nearby Portland high school or perhaps an ill-fated character from the movie Jackie Brown. I prefer to think this beer was named after the drug addict Samuel L. Jacksons character shot dead in the trunk of his car. The poor bastard deserves a beer named after him. And besides, naming a beer after a fictitious drug addict gangster is less risqué than naming a beer after a high school. You can get in big trouble for naming a beer after a school. Thats like asking the Marlboro Man to be the campus mascot. Its bound to ruffle a few feathers even at my old alma mater, the Kegger Academy, whose sports teams were known informally as the Fighting Drunkards.
Beaumont pours fogged cinnamon-brown with a slight splash of cream in the color though none in the taste. The brew is modestly translucent with scant carbonation and a marginal head.
The aroma of this bottom-fermented brew is its most compelling element. It is sweet, fruity, and inviting, though my revisitation of this beer in its bottled form showed something amiss in the smell. The taste begins malty but thin, crescendos into a pointed bitterness, then retreats to a lemony-sour aftertaste. Sadly, this spring seasonal is corrupted by a thin, astringent mouthfeel that clings to the teeth like a spiders web, and is dominated by a morose aftertaste.

Beaumont Bock -- named for the neighborhood, Beaumont Village -- is a burnished deep copper with large-bubbled lace that evaporates. The smell doesn't seem like anything special, but improves once one has actually tasted the beer. Inhaling the aroma, with beer in mouth, works very nicely indeed. There's some sweet caramel and brown sugar, and also some burnt flavors that are perhaps a tiny bit too strong. It's certainly sturdy, and is better suited to chilly, damp spring days, rather than the bright sunny ones when you dare to dream that winter is finally over. I discovered some sediment at the bottom of my bottle (my sample is probably a few months old) and I like the beer better with it. Even with the sediment, the bock is quite clean for a lager, but could use a slightly drier finish, with a touch more hops. Mouthfeel is thinnish, which is good; the sweet caramel malts give the beer plenty of substance. The finish is a bit wet, and shares a trait with mouthwash. Apart from this, it's an impressive lager from a brewery that otherwise makes ales, but it's not a knockout.

Rich golden brown in color with aromas of a Belgian spiced ale; slightly sour. Thick, white creamy cloudy head with the bubbles showing like champagne. Good malt with touch of yeast/sourness. Not a typical Germanic bock but good malt with balanced spiciness. Drinkable as a beer as long as the notions of a bock are not present.
