This beer was brewed in honor of a group of Rushing Duck friends. Every year in January, this group embarks on an annual camping trip. What’s manlier than camping during the coldest month of the year? Not a whole lot, so enjoy this beer while sitting around a fire in the freezing cold, in the middle of the woods with good friends. Manuary Ale is a Black Belgian Style Tripel. It is brewed with a Trappist strain of yeast, and despite its dark color, it has a light body and no roasted or dark notes. So you’re probably asking yourself “why bother brewing a black version of a typically very light colored beer?” … because we can.

Extremely foamy, meringue like head. Nose of banana, spices, yeast. Very hot, raison, dark fruit. tingly on tounge, root beer barrel candy finish.

A- slightly brown when held up to light, but mostly black with tan colored head that sticks around until the end. The retention is spot on.
S- Classic Tripel smell...Trappist Belgian Yeast dominates the nose with some fruit esters including banana. Getting ready for a spicy Tripel as I smell it. Immediately reminded of Westmalle Tripel.
M- high carbonation, smooth backbone, not syrupy and the spiciness hides he 10% abv nicely.
T- wow spicy. Belgian Yeast dominates Initially followed by spiciness as your mouth adjusts to the carbonation. Does not taste like A black beer, with no roasted malts or dark flavoring. Simply a classic Tripel that does not disappoint. If blindfolded, I would think this beer is a light blonde color.
O- it doesn't stand out from traditional Belgian tripels, nor should it. The brewer does well to honor the style while putting his own twist on the coloring of the beer.

A: So it's not your typical golden color tripel as it is billed as a Belgian-Style Black Tripel. The trouble is that the beer is not really black at all. It has the color of a dark and stormy. Very dark brown with chestnut highlights and a see-thru head.
S: Distinctive clove from Trappist yeast. Discernible notes of darkly ripened fruit. Sweet, perfumey, and spicy.
M: Low to moderate body. Softer feel cut has moderate-high carbonation. Rather strong alcohol solvency character on end.
T: Raisin, brown sugar, basil and cloves. If you are looking for roast, chocolate, or coffee flavors it has none, trying to stick to the classic tripel. If you're going to make a tripel make sure you can do a basic one first. RD doesn't delve into the Belgian world. But they do have a good coffee porter and dark Belgian with cherries, so perhaps you can count this up to me being jaded but it tasted pedestrian for them, which is a compliment.
