I have been visiting Shoreline Beverage for about 22 years and back to the days when it was owned by another older gentleman whose pictures with famous sports stars in the 60's (Joe Namath, Muhammad Ali) still grace the wall behind the counter. The store seems to have weathered all the storms and trends in beverage distribution and thus has grown into a much greater store.

One of the secrets of this fabled "mom and pop" is the basic no-nonsense approach to business and the honest, friendly, and realistic way in which every customer is served. While I have visited other beer stores on Long Island, NY, all pale by comparison to Shoreline in terms of selection and service.

While Shoreline has plenty of Coors Light, Bud, and Corona to assuage the thirst of the masses, their three rows of imports and micro brews present endless choices and an educational tour for me. Both Stu (owner) and my wife make light fun of me when I enter Shoreline for the "big decision" of what to buy for the weekend as I read all the labels and take my time. Does the store have everything? No, it just seems like it, but if it's available, Shoreline can get it to you.

One of great things I have been buying lately at Shoreline are the growlers to go. Near the cold section there are 5 or 6 taps going into a sink that always seem to have a variety of beers/ales. I recently had both the Baltic Porter and Octoberfest from Southampton Publick Ale House brewing in growlers from these taps.

He consistently gets Belgian beers nobody on Long Island has. There are maybe 900 of them, so obviously most aren't that great, but he consistently gets winners. I waited over 3 years hoping to try Gouden Carolus Tripel and last time I was there, he had it and it was one of the best I've ever had. I can't say that I know much about non-Belgian beers as they really hold no appeal for me. He's a fair guy too, took back something I bought that was dark and let me exchange it, not everyone will.

Vibe: inside is crowded, but you have two full aisles to browse the good stuff in comfort - one side has the domestics, the other has the imports. Only catch to the place: located in a terrible area driving-wise: windy narrow roads with lots of traffic, terrible signage (you would never know its there if you weren't looking for it) - so unless you're a local or on foot, an inconvenient location.

Service: hit or miss - I've gotten the disinterested type and also the really cool knowledgeable-type, so it might depend on who's working. this is probably (other than location) their only detriment.

Selection: real good - on par with Superstar in Huntington - lots to look at, found some real gems on those shelves - pumped up my score in this area recently, as they have stuff I don't see at other stores.

Prices: same as the rest of the places

Definitely a good spot to check out on Long Island - this is a bit of a trek for me but still worth going to. They have a good selection of craft beers from many different brewers, and the nicest thing is that they tend to have many different varieties per brewer, including some that I don't see in other LI bottle shops. Everyone there seems very helpful, and the shelves are neatly arranged. The only caveat is that the bottles almost all seem very dusty, which makes me a little nervous sometimes. Because of that, I'll sometimes try other shops first but if I can't find something elsewhere I know there's a good shot that they'll have it.

Shoreline is a really good place to go. It's very similar to Big Z's except a bit smaller but the selection is pretty much the same. They have everything from Founders to allagash to alesmith. They also have a growler station which has about 6-10 beers on tap usually featuring local breweries. Overall there is usually at least one memebr on staff that is knowledgable and the prices are fair for long island. I frequently visit this place for most people that visit usually are purchasing BMC so the "harder to find" craft beers usually stay on the shelf for a long period of time (which can be good or bad) than at other craft beer distributors.
