I really liked the "standard" Up All Night soe I picked this up yesterday to compare the two.Pours almost opaque except for just a slight reddish brown highlight at the bottom of the glass when held to the light,a creamy beige head atop.Aromas of dark fruit and sweet bourbon, there is a slight buttery note in there as well.A nice smooth almost slick feel makes for way to easy drinking. The boubon plays a big role on the palate but doesn't smack you in the face,it goes well with the drunken dark fruit and chocolate/mocha flavors.Wow this is almost too easy to drink because it's not over the top with bourbon and sweetness,a well made barrel aged "big" porter here.

Note:Winter 2013 Vintage

A: Pours an opaque but clear jet black in color with light to moderate amounts of gentle visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and a light to moderate amount of cola brown highlights. The beer has a half finger tall fizzy foamy dark tan head that reduces to a medium to large sized patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of bourbon, oak, and vanilla from the barrel aging over the top of moderate aromas of roasted and chocolate malts. Lighter aromas of freshly ground coffee beans. Very light notes of dark fruits (plum and raisin).

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of roasted malts with a slightly stronger flavor of chocolate malts and just a hint of dark chocolate sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of freshly brewed coffee and a moderate to strong flavor of bourbon, oak, and vanilla. Light amounts of bitterness and booze in the finish.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: This is definitely a big barrel-aged porter and is enhanced over the base beer from the time spent in the barrels. Not overly sweet but still quite flavorful with a decent amount of complexity, making it pretty easy to drink and quite enjoyable.

Appearance: dark brown, blackish color. Opaque and with no visible head. Just a touch of lacing that sticks around

Smell: bourbon, coffee, chocolate and alcohol

Taste: opens up with big bourbon and alcohol. It moves towards a porter profile with coffee and chocolate.

Mouthfeel: nice medium body. Noticeably a porter. Some alcohol warmth

Overall: a pleasant and well done bourbon barrel porter. Not super good but tasty and worth while

Appearance: Pours a midnight brown color with a frothy tan head that leaves a few streaks

Smell: Ashy and chocolatey, with Bourbon undertones

Taste: Chocolate and vanilla, with ash and Bourbon tones building into the middle; slightly boozy with plenty of vanilla and Bourbon in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; slightly thin for this type of beer

Overall: There are better Bourbon barrel aged beers out there but this is a pretty nice one with well-balanced flavors

22oz Bomber

Big, huge thanks to Wilson for this guy! Now if I can get the 3" of wax off the neck without slicing my finger off we'll be good to go. Wow, that took some work. The pour is matte black, actually absorbing light. The head is the color of milk chocolate with a wispy ring around the glass that leaves striated lacing. It's purty!

Ah, the nose is what should be expected from a correctly barrel aged beer. Barrel upfront but not over the top. Pecans, caramel, vanilla, and soft coconut with deep inhaling. The base porter is roastier than most with high cocoa content chocolate. A tendril of clean smokiness rises through the mix. As it warms the coffee notes com forward, freshly ground and mouthwatering.

He flavor brings more spirit, a touch of bourbon. The barrel continues to bring all those delicious notes I mentioned previously. There's a good amount of pecan and vanilla mingling with roasty porter. A sweetness pops up mid palate that I didn't get in the nose, that of macerated berries. The coffee notes run softly from front to back while cocoa kicks in on the finish. The roast lingers nicely. Tons of depth with no single aspect beating you over the head.

For a 10+% beer this guy drinks like a 7%er. The body sits squarely between moderate and heavy with a lively carbonation that's silky smooth. A touch of heat pops up on the swallow but is quickly drowned out by dry roastiness. The drinkability is flat out dangerous, no wonder it's encased in wax.

This is a damn fine porter. Roasty, barrel rich, coffee kick, and an insane drinkability. This beer is tough to both put down and stop sniffing. Even handed barrel aging sets this above a lot of bourbon bombs presently on the market. Thanks Wil!
