American Amber / Red Ale |  5.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Cherry Wood Smoked Malt and English Golden Naked Oats give this beer a truly unique flavor. Slight smokiness pairs well with the nuttiness from the oats and great flavor from German Chocolate Wheat Malt. A great beer to pair with BBQ, fish, or any hearty meal!

On tap at the brewery. Served in a pint glass

Relatively clear copper/amber color with reddish highlights. About two fingers worth of off white head that slowly recedes into a smallish crown that lingers throughout the life of the pint leaving behind a fair amount of lacing.

Caramel and biscuity malts mingle with the smokiness giving off a nice complex aroma. There is just the slightest hint of hops, but not enough to distract you from the smoke and malts. Very nice

Bready, toasty, and caramel malt notes top out the flavors. The smokiness is present but not overpowering, leaving behind a nice aftertaste. What hops are there are slightly citrusy, but more floral and earthy. Medium bodied and moderately carbonated with a very smooth mouthfeel. Very complex, but easily drinkable beer

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this beer. I have had darker smoked beers, but this is my first smoked amber. I find it to be nicely balanced, and the base beer seems to be very good in its own right, but the smokiness just adds to it without defining the beer. Just an all around good beer. I will be back for more

Served from tap into a sampler tumbler. Poured a deep red-orange with a minimal off-white head. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, earth, earth hop, and subtle smoke. The flavor was of sweet malt, caramel, earth, earth hop, cotton candy, smoke, and subtle hair spray. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was an average brew. Nothing on this one really stood out to me at all if I am honest for the style. Yes, there was a smoke note going on as advertised, but it really didn’t add anything to the brew. I do have one question, where the Hell does the taste of hair spray come from!? I have experienced this in quite a few brews and can’t stand it (if you do, your palate is broken). Not sure if this was just an off flavor or what, but it killed the brew for me. Worth trying if you get the chance, just hope you don’t get the hair spray I got.

Filled this up for the second time at the brewery.
A blood sausage dark red, really dark for an amber. Just a Whispy layer of white. More impressive straight from the draft of course.

Aroma, very malty and a tinge of smoke. A peaty caramel. Herbal hops and some cocoa finish it off. Pretty nice.

I'd say nearly mid bodied. Slightly lower carbonation, but adequate. Bigger feeling than most so the lower carb is ok. Obviously no alcohol presence.
This may be my regular local drinker. I really enjoyed this one.

8/17/13 This recipe as changed and is NOTHING like the original. A lightly smokey grain beer now. Hazy gold pour. Like a smokey Yuengling. Nothing against Yuengling, but that was not what this brew was at its inception.

Very happy to have another brewery on the south side of Charlotte, and the tasting room is the perfect mix of industrial sleek and neighborhood warmth. Great job!

Had the regular and the nitro versions, which were fun to compare. Scoring reflects some mix of the two. Darker red than most ambers I've tried (or remember) recently, which I kind of liked. Seemed to be lacking a strong scent - got a little of the smoke and a touch of malt, but not much else. The taste brings the smoke out and is actually pretty good. Not spectacular, but interesting. The nitro version felt a little too flat and didn't have the creaminess I thought nitro would add. The regular version was lightly carbonated and felt thin. The thin feel of these beers (and all of their others - I tried the Light Rail Pale Ale, Babymaker DIPA, Blonde and Greenway IPA) is the dominant characteristic. Each beer, for the applicable style, seemed somewhat watery. The Greenway IPA was the most complete and is pretty solid. I'll stick with it for now and hope that the other beers get dialed in a bit more.
