Average finger or so head, very little retention to the dark brown foam, ends up pooling around the edges, the lacing is haphazard and not sticky at all. Jet black liquid, fully opaque, no sign of sediment, thin line of orange at the glass bottom. The nose comprised mostly of carob, roasted coffee, molten caramel and then licorice, good base of oats and sweeter grains, not getting much honey here, more smokiness than milkiness, quick burst of green hops at the end along with white citrus zest, can’t quite discern any clear fruit scents. Medium-bodied, a little lighter than expected, has enjoyable flow but the close to zero carbonation does not pep it up much. Sure, there’s lots of coffee roast, dark chocolate and mocha, not sweet enough for a lot of caramel or vanilla cream but there. Licorice, orange peel, cola, oats, scone, flowers but still no honey. The lactose shows at the finish, particularly as it warms. Handles its ABV very well and even has a high refreshing quotient, just not sure what unique signature it offers which warrants the stiff price of entry.

Winter 2013 vintage. Poured from a bomber into a shaker pint, the beer is almost jet black, with auburn-brown highlights around the edges, and a thin, tight, halo of light tan head. Aromas of deep, rich roast and bitter coffee, booze, chocolate, subtle sweet notes of vanilla and honey, and some earthy notes. This smells perfectly balanced and rich. Wow! Flavors are very robust, with a blast of cocoa nibs, brownies, dark roasted coffee, subtle sweet notes of honey and cream, and some caramel notes. This is heavy on the palate, but light and smooth in mouth. The beer still holds some of the dry characteristics of your typical porter, too. This is great. The aftertaste is mostly chocolate, with some earthy tones in there, too. Roasted and bitter linger on a slightly dry, mostly smooth finish. This is a great beer!

22oz Bomber

Winter 2013

The Man, the Myth, the Legend....Wil, sent me this bottle. Thanks, dude! Up All Night is blacker than the Ace of Spades. Pin prick carbonation bubbles crawl up the glass from every spot below. A creamy milk chocolate head rises to a finger in height before slowly settling at a thick cap that's constantly replenished. Thin lacking sheets the glass. That's purty!

Dark roast coffee macerated dark berries is the first thing to come to mind, yes it smells that delicious. A drizzle of honey and a rather heavily roasted barley, just short of char, play second fiddle. There's a dash of cream in there but it's so faint I'm pretty sure it's in my mind and not the beer. The coffee and roast together is flat out mouthwatering.

Dark roast coffee again mingles with dark berries but the berries are more subdued here than the aroma. Powdery cocoa and roasted barley bring a roasty bittersweet base. The drizzle of honey floats on the periphery with a faint sweetness. The coffee and roast aren't as sharp on the palate as in the nose but this beer is seamless.

10%? I believe I am being lied to. The body runs right down the middle of the spectrum. There's no stick at all and I struggle to even pull out any alcohol. The finish is soft and eventually dries up with a mild roast bitterness. Want cliché? How does 'dangerously drinkable' float your boat?

The coffee is well placed, a component as opposed to an iced coffee alcoholic beverage. This porter is about the porter and a fine porter this porter is. Tastes like more. Thanks again, Wil!

A: Pours an opaque but clear jet black in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass along the edges and some faint dark cola brown highlights. The beer has a half finger tall foamy very dark tan head that slowly reduces to a medium sized thick patch surrounded by a thick film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of roasted malts along with some moderate to strong aromas of coffee grounds (right after the coffee is brewed). There are also some light to moderate aromas of bittersweet chocolate and just a hint of honey sweetness.

T: Upfront there are moderate to strong flavors of roasted malts with light to moderate flavors of burnt toast and just a touch of honey sweetness. There is a strong flavor of freshly made coffee/coffee grounds as well as a moderate flavor of fudge. Just a hint of earthy and piney hops. Light amounts of lingering bitterness and just a touch of alcohol sweetness in the finish.

M: Medium to full bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly creamy.

O: Very enjoyable and very well done - exactly what is advertised with the breakfast flavors/aromas. Really nice presence of coffee.

Pours jet black wich is out of the ordinary for any find of porter,a billowing beige head atop.Wow coffee grownds jump out at ya in the nose along with bitter chocolate, not much sweetness detected.Dry with alot of coffee on the palate, the oats do make for a creamy smooth feel.A bit of char, roast, and just a hint of molasses round out the rest of the palate.I like the coffee and char,it'sAmerican style with it's char and roast, the alcohol sweetness only plays a minor roll as it warms.Well done.

Pretty much opaque, even when held in front of a direct light source. Aroma is almost exclusively freshly ground espresso beans with a hint of chocolate. Flavor is predominately bitter chocolate and, you guessed it, coffee. Struggled to taste the purported honey flavor. Noticeable impression of spiciness/warmth/alcohol presence on the back end into the finish, bordering on being overbearing. Patent bitterness lingering in the aftertaste. Medium-full bodied with a creamy thickness very appropriate for American Porter/Stout styles. Wouldn't mind dialing the honey up a notch.
