On tap at the brewery, which says "While chocolate malt and an abundance of German Munich malts provide a solid malt backbone, the medium body and lager fermentation make this beer surprisingly drinkable."
Pours a clear but very dark mahogany color, with a durable tan head that leaves just the right (aesthetically) amount of lacing on the glass.
M: Very smooth; medium body; medium-low carbonation; slightly dry at finish.
This is an excellent dunkel, even by Bavarian standards (which I just visited again last month). It probably helps that this American micro-brewer specializes in lagers. It does depart from my impression of a typical German dunkel in using a bit more dark malt, or some malt that is bit darker, leading to a more pronounced dark malt component in the aroma and, even more so, in the flavor. Indeed, the long lasting flavor of dark malts is certainly on of this beer's strong points.
