I was expecting big things from this beer as Beer Works usually produces great stuff. Nose smelled a little of strawberries, but I didn't pick up much chocolate.

Then, I tasted it. I really wish that I hadn't. The combination of the bitterness and the strawberry-esque essence made it taste like burnt plastic. Bitter, nasty, burnt plastic. I gave it a second sip to try to give this beer a second chance, and then it went straight down the drain.

I hate to write bad reviews like this for hard working local breweries, but this one just completely missed the mark.

Added as a new beer because original beer with same name from brewery appears to be a totally different beer.

Had on tap a Hingham location

Appearance: 1/2 inch head, clear, dark-brown colored, with medium-low carbonation

Smell: dark chocolate, espresso, light strawberry

Taste: milk chocolate and creamy start, dark chocolate, light espresso, and strawberry taste towards the end. The strawberry becomes more pronounced towards the end.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy body, sweet with small bitterness in the middle and very sweet end, rich, moderate carbonation

Overall: I can see this being a divisive beer as it has a very sweet end, even for a milk stout. That said I think it is very tasty and is in tune with their Irish Cream Stout. This makes a wonderful dessert type of beer and is one of the better offerings I have had from Beer Works. I am going to find a six of this.

Not expecting much from this beer, but something to share with the misses.

Off white colored foamy 1/2 finger head, fades pretty slowly with some decent lacing too, super dakr molasses brown colored beer with little hint of light coming through at the thin parts.

Nose brings lots of fake chocolate aroma, like choc extract and syrup, hersheys syrupy like, little candy, plenty syrup, definite chocolate though and perhaps some chocolate added right to the beer, very very faint strawberry after really trying to find it. Other beer notes... well pretty much none so hard to call this a beer in the first place.

Taste a little more beer like, and more strawberry too, a nice but light strawberry flavor, again more like a fake candy strawberry than a real strawberry infusion, almost strawberry perfume like. Some chocolate, again like a hersheys syrup chocolate and not so much fresh chocolate, little creamy milk chocolate in the center though. This time there is a little beer, some caramel, malted milk ball like cookie biscuit malt, toasty like too, and mild bitterness from a hint of an earthy hop. Finish is dry, quite dry actually but a little sticky, bit more bitterness, more fake chocolate but at the same time a little melted real chocolate in there.

Mouth is med bod, little creamy, decent carb.

Overall eh, nose was really fake and no real beer in there, taste was a bit better but nothing too great, didn't have huge expectations for this so it wasn't really a let down, but just nothing too special... now to see what the misses thinks... she was disgusted... "ick, chocolate and strawberries?! How can you taste anything like that... it's horrible!"

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A: Deep black pour with what looks to be good clarity. A finger and a half of beige head settles into a quarter inch crown. Foamy lacing forms sheets and thick rings on the glass.

S: Heavy roasted malts scents of roasted coffee beans and woody, acrid roast. Hints of soot. Acidic black coffee. Dry chocolate cake and chocolate truffles. Bakers chocolate. Hard strawberry candy and strawberry puree.

T: A whole lot of roast up front. Heavily roasted coffee, leaning towards burnt. Charred wood. Acidic black coffee. Slight steely metallic taste. Bakers chocolate and black cocoa powder. Dry chocolate cake and chocolate truffles. Gritty, green, and oily hops interject briefly. Strawberry flavors kick in mid to late with a candy-like flavor that had to have come from extract. Acidic roasted and woody malt flavors still own the finish, although some subtle dry chocolate flavors and a lingering strawberry sweetness stick around too.

M: Medium-thick body. Very full and creamy with a soft firmness and a real sense of substance. Low carbonation prickles a little. Velvety smooth. They really nailed the body.

O: The base beer projects shades of an Irish dry stout, with a lot of heavily roasted and even burnt malt flavor, bitterness, and acidity. This isn't bad, but the problem is that this is a very bold and hard flavor profile to counter. The strawberry comes off a little artificially, but extract is really the only route to go in order to get a meaningful impact out of it flavor-wise. Chocolate gets a little lost in the shuffle. A little tweaking and this could be pretty good. Perhaps a less aggressive use of roasted malts, or maybe even some vanilla or lactose to bring out a more familiar balancing sweetness.

A: Pours dark brown with a light brown head.

S: Slightly burned (via microwave) Baker's chocolate squares, very mild caramel.

T: Chocolaty aftertaste left on the tongue, leaves mouth slightly dry. Mild hint of strawberries after burping (slightly unpleasant).

M: Surprisingly light, little carbonation, leaves mouth slightly tingly.

O: Didn't live up to my expectation, no love fest between us, this relationship is over when the bottle is empty.

Pours deep brown with a bubbly half-finger of head. Some lace.

Coffee and real-deal fresh strawberries (berries are faint, but there) in the aroma. Chocolate? I guess so.

Lean dark roasted malt. Watery. Lacks any richness or depth. Coffee, moderate bitterness. Fairly smooth with a good malt flavor profile. No fruit, no chocolate.

Thin and foamy in your mouth. Just ok.

Ok to drink, and goes down easy, but I didn't really like this one. I think I would pass if offered this again. No hate- Just ok. Just not very stout-like.
