Appearance: moderate carbonation, 1/4 inch head, hazy, light brown in color

Smell: bread and alcohol

Taste: bread, raisins, yeast, alcohol, and big time bananas

Mouthfeel: sweet, medium body, moderate carbonation

Overall: A nice bready and banana combo. An enjoyable Belgian brew. Not the best in the style, but certainly one worth a couple rounds on a snowy day.

On tap at BBW Fenway on Sunday 2/21/10. Dark auburn color, but clear and bright looking. Smell was yeast and fruity, like a nice dubbel. Taste was spot on for the style. Lots of fruit like apple and pears, but also tasted bread and spice. Mouthfeel was adequate, but this beer would be a knockout if it was a tad less watery. A bit more body would do wonders for this beer. A good supply of alcohol gives this beer a nice warming feeling. This is one of the better specialty beers that BBW keeps bringing back, and for good reason.

Dark hazy brown, not much head.

Aroma is yeasty. Funky malt fruitiness awaits.

Taste is of dark caramel and raisins. Full-bodied with a sweet and robust finish.

Mouthfeel is the best aspect. Light in carbonation, letting the flavors truly shine.

The taste borders on cloying, but this is a solid dubbel that is worth a shot.

Had during my recent trip to Boston.

Pours a hazy dark red/brown color with a thin wispy head, leaves some lacing on the glass as I drink it.

Smell is fairly malty, some spiciness to it.

Taste is straightforward, strong malty presence with a bit of a dark fruit presence.

Slightly hazy ambery appearance. Very smooth in the mouth. HOWEVER, this beer packs a punch. Way too much punch. Feels like you're drinking a raisin liquor. Smells just like it tastes. Nothing complex about it, just harsh flavors. I had to mark the drinkability down because I couldn't even imagine finishing a single pint.

Pours a dark red-brown, topped with a one finger tan head, leaves tiny wisps of lacing.
Malty and fruity aroma, dark bread, raisin.
Lots of caramel in the taste, spicy, malty and dark fruit. Like a spirit soaked fruit and spice cake.
Medium-full bodied, the spices got to me after awhile and lower the drinkability.

Divvied the loot with this one today with Jim and Kumar in tote. “16-ounce” draught at the Fenway location.

Half-inch plumy, white initial head subsides to clingy skein. On the darker side of ruby red, reaching an almost burnt umber hue, and crystal clear. Usual Beer Works soapy scent present in nose, but combined with the deep malt profile made for a somewhat puzzling bouquet. There also seemed to be grapefruits hanging around in there, like ripe coconuts waiting to be harvested. Cola-like effervescence with some subtle hop and spring bud willowy notes. There were also some plum favors along with a slight cranberry tartness, followed in the end by something akin to heavy metal. Alcohol is a constant blip on the radar, though still quite drinkable. Because of the unusual flavor profile, I qualify this offering as better than most other Beer Works pours I have consumed.

At the Fenway BBW

This beer poured a ruby/brown body with a small white head.

The nose, for what I could make out at the bar, was a sweet mix of plums, raisins and other dark fruits and phenols.

The taste was a very fresh malty double. Clean malt, raisins, plums, with a very sickly sweet, almost teeth rotting sort of sweetness. Light to medium bodied with some soft caramel, very faint hints of chocolate. That classic BBW yeast taste with a mild phenolic overtone.

Really a very nice belgian double. It has a lot of that classic BBW malt and yeast taste that doesn’t quite give it a classic dubbel taste, but still, a very nice beer and a must try.

I sampled this Belgian Dubbel at both the Canal St. and Salem locations.

This ale poured a hazy, caramel red-brown, with some small white foam. The smell was very faint and sweet (not fruit in the nose). The taste was slightly sweet, with a candy-sugar flavor, but with a hint of bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel was creamy and smooth with modest carbonation and medium body. The drinkability was good, and this ale "went down easy", but the flavor was a bit thin, and this was not an impressive dubbel.

Deep murky brown colour, slim lacing. Looks like a lot of haze and yeast suspension to me. Smells of medicinal phenols, tropical fruit and toasted grain.

Slick medium body with a moderate carbonation. Dark toasted malt flavour is thick and more on the dry side. Fruity esters and yeast get juicy in the middle, hops are mild and let the phenols to a bit of balancing. Touch of alcohol in the finish.

A decent dubbel, perhaps need to be conditioned a bit longer … seemed too green IMO.
