Went on a mini brewery crawl this weekend stopping at Triple C, Heist, Birdsong, and finishing with dinner at Growlers Pourhouse. Started with Triple C, now for the next stop in our evening out... Charlotte's newest brewpub; Heist Brewery.

Situated in the cultural hub of NoDa, Heist occupies the old Highland Mill building. The place is beautiful... just the right mix of new and old. You get some very nice woodwork and stonework adorning the walls, while at the same time preserving the history of the space. When you walk in there is an open space with several tables and a bar, as you pass through into the next area you pass a kitchen area with a custom wood burning pizza oven that is open to the rest of the space so that the aroma of pizza baking fills the whole building. Once you stop gawking at the pizza oven you will notice a wall full of windows showcasing the brewhouse, and another bar area. Really, in addition to being eye catching and well laid out the place is huge, there is upstairs seating and yet a third bar type area with seats and tap handles. I could hang out here all day

The service is decent, the waiter we had was attentive and polite. He tried to be helpful, and knew a fair amount about the menu, but very little about the beer.

Now, on to the menu... I feel like this place has fallen victim to "celebrity chef syndrome". To many dishes that try to be just a bit too clever. Too little food for too high a price. Lobster Bisque Test Tubes, BBQ Braised Pork Belly Corn Dogs, Asian Shrimp with Lemon Wahhabi Cotton Candy?, Chicken and Waffles... C'mon man!! The burgers, and flat breads don't look too bad, but lets stop trying so hard to be the next food network star.

Now on to the main attraction... The beer. Unfortunately I am underwhelmed by the beer. Eleven house made beers on tap and all of them mediocre at best. How about we cut the beer menu down to a manageable four or five offerings and make them shine!! I don't need ten or eleven beers from a new start up brewery, I need two or three beers that blow my hair back (back when I had hair). We ordered two samplers so that we could try all of the beers, I thought the oatmeal stout was the best beer of the bunch. I would go on to describe the rest of them but I forgot about them even as I was drinking them. Now, don't get me wrong. None of the beers were deeply flawed, just uninspired. While none of them knocked my socks off, none of them were offensive or had bad off flavors either, just boring. I'm not looking for crazy, extreme beers, just good beers done well.

I really wanted to like this place. I was pulling for them to be the next great Charlotte area brewery... and they still could be, but there is work to be done.

All in all I am ready for the next place, on to Birdsong...

I didn't really love any of the beers. And the growler caps had paper in them,. Rather than rubber. So the beer was flat by the time I got back from vacation.

Great vibe, especially when you are trying to elevate the night rather than dress it down. Also this is a great spot for brunch and big groups, as they have a fully stocked bar and utterly impressive food. Their beer is great quality and I definitely look forward to stopping in more frequently!

Stopped for dinner while in Charlotte. It's a huge place, but it was early and uncrowded. I was pleasantly surprised with the couple beers I tried, and the food was good - not standard bar/brewery fare.

Nice remodeled mill in the heart of the NODA district. An eclectic feel from the crowd. They usually have a band playing on the weekends and often during weekdays on their patio. Food is good, beers are great.

I really like the vibe of this place, a nice open feel in reclaimed warehouse space with a pleasant decor. The place was pretty large inside and split up into a couple of different rooms along with some outdoor seating as well (and it appears that will be expanding as they were working on it when I visited).

Beers were well poured with a proper amount of head and a proper temperature.

Service was friendly and helpful, giving us the amount of attention that we wanted and I got the chance to have a conversation with the Executive Chef whom was really nice, pleasant, and informative. All of the staff I interacted with was very knowledgeable about the beers offered (and it seemed like beers in general).

As it is the taproom for the brewery, it only carried their beers but they did have a variety of styles though with a heavier dosage of Belgian influenced beers. Everything from an APA to a RIS to a couple of saisons.

The food was excellent, you can tell that one of the owners is a chef. There were several things that I really wanted to try on the menu and I'm hoping I will get the chance to go back and sample some of the others. I have a barbecue burger made with three different cuts of meat and lots of very tasty toppings - also really liked the homemade tater tots.

Price was inline with what I would expect based on other breweries in the area and the state. Food prices were a touch higher than some of the other places but the quality and attention to the menu warranted it.

Stop # 443 on my world brewery tour.

Late lunch ~1:00 on a Wednesday. Huge space in reclaimed industrial warehouse-esque space. Sat at a table in the smaller upfront bar area. Had 1.5 flights so got to try all the beers. Managed to loose my tasting notes but can say they Belgian-inspired line up was well done. Did not get any food but it looked to be a place that takes food very seriously.

As stated previously, great food, ok beer. The chef/owner is brother to a friend of mine from college, i know he is a world class chef. The beer was good, will have a real homerun if they can get the right brewmaster in there.

While on a beercation stop in Charlotte, we decided on a whim to visit, since it was a Monday and everything else closed early. Had low expectations based on previous reviews.

Food was first class. I had the Mac and Lobster and was blown away. All six of us had exceptional food.

The beer was good. Not spectacular, but I enjoyed my flight of various takes of saison and an IPA. All very good, in my opinion. They also had a fresh, just tapped double IPA, which was excellent. If Tropical Thunder is on, it is a must-have.

Would definitely return again and recommend you visit.

So Heist has been around for a fair amount of time and up until yesterday, I've only had one of their beers at the Bobcats' game and wasn't all that impressed. I always heard the food there was great, but the beers left a lot to be desired.

Headed over to the brewery with a buddy. Ordered a Belgian PA and it was really good. He got a saison that was decent as well. From what I understand, Heist has been trying to pick up the quality of their beers, and it showed yesterday. Big pours, decent selection, tasty brews.

The food was awesome. I got a Cuban sandwich and my buddy grabbed an eggplant parmesan sandwich. Both were fantastic. Prices weren't bad...maybe a little bit on the high end, but the quality of the food is worth it.

The atmosphere is great. Seating outside, two bars where they have liquor, as well. Lots of seating. The place was pretty full, watching the World Cup.

Friendly and attentive service.

Will have to bring the wife and kid back next time for a nice weekend lunch.

Theres one thing that can sum this place up, good food, bad beer. The pretzels and cheese dip were great, my meals have been really good, the brewry is just not producing good beer. I heard they hired a new brewmaster. If he wants to earn the respect of charlotte beer nerdz, he needs to brew a good ipa, a good stout, and a good sour. I'm looking forward to see how this develops.

Neat spot with two separate bars - nice draft choices and good folks behind the bar. We enjoyed some flights and found the food to be quite good. I've been told they have a great brunch on weekends - need to swing by and check that out.

If you're in the area - stop by this place in NODA - you can also hit NODA Brewing, Birdsong Brewing, Growler's Pourhouse & Salud bottle shop. Great food in the area too - Cabo Fish Taco is a must. Almost forgot Revolution - great pizza and very nice draft selection.
