Brewed by:
Perrin Brewery
Michigan, United States | website

Style: Schwarzbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We took the recipe for our Black Lager and doubled the ingredients, put it in stainless for two weeks and laid it down in bourbon Barrels. Six months later the magic happened and the goat was birthed. Black Goat is a Double Black Lager; sure to please the harshest of critics. Caution: this billy kicks!

This is a tough one to score. First, because it is bourbon barrel aged. Second, because it is listed as a Schwarzbier and on the label it is is "Double Black Lager". So does that make it a Doppelbock? I mean, there is a goat on the label... I ask because it drinks more like a doppel than a schwarz to me.

Poured a medium bodied light black with a slightly fizzy tan head from the bomber. Pretty solid on the carbination. There is a lot of sweet maltiness. Dark bread and dark fruits. There is a little bit of chocolate, but I dont get that dry, roasted flavor like a Schwarz. More of the carmalized brown sugar/molasses. There are distinct bourbon notes in the aroma and flavor. Vanilla and oak with a touch of alcohol. Forward, but not overbearing. Fairly heavy bodied, especially for a barrel aged beer. Again, less Schwarz and more of a semi creamy/silky Doppel to me.

I was worried about whether this style would support the barrel aging character, but it did. It is a nice compliment. Doesn't drink too much like a Schwarz at the end of the day. It does drink like a tasty beer though.

Had this on tap last night at Perrin, was very good. Really wanted to try the malted milk stout but it ran out earlier in the week.

A bomber with no date from a recent trip to Michigan. I believe it's not more than 2-3 months past release and not concerned given the style. I'll pour this in my pilsner glass for the taste drive!

Look- Pours a thin but oily black leaving a beautiful looking two fingers of mocha colored foam.

Smell- Dark roast, chocolate and a hint of molasses.

Taste- Bakers chocolate, dark bread, tobacco and wood. A very slight hint of pine hidden in the back.

Feel- Oily with good carbonation and a crisp finish.

Overall- This is probably my first Double Black Lager aged in bourbon barrels. A very interesting beer that borders a stout and porter with a very slight hint of a black IPA. Nice notes of chocolate and roast but lacking in barrel except for the wood flavor. The lack of bourbon aside, I rather enjoyed it and wish I had bought another.

22oz bomber. No date.

Look is black and thin body with small beige head.

Smell is dark fruits, vanilla and maybe some cocoa. It's not obviously bourbon, but the oaky notes show up as it warms. Subtle but inviting.

Taste is chocolate, vanilla and then the fruits and finally bourbon. Bourbon shows up with some booziness, but it's very mild. Bitterness arriving late but strong.

Feel is rather light, but ya strongly carbonated and has a sharp bitter profile. It's an interesting feel, kind of dry but with a little stickiness too. Stays on the tongue longer than expected.

Overall, this is the first bourbon barrel schwarzbier I've had so I can't make a comparison, but I think it's well crafted and does good things with balance, flavor and drink ability. I personally like some more body, but this isn't a stout so m not going to be too harsh there.

22 ounce bottle into a tulip glass.

Pours near black and opaque, small head with some lacing. Smell is malt, bourbon, some chocolate and cocoa, some vanilla, coffee, a little bread. Taste leads with the malt, bourbon, chocolate, some oak, light caramel and molasses, vanilla, light coffee. Has a good feel to it, smooth, solid body, well carbonated.

Good effort on this, well blended between the bourbon barrel and malt. Good price point, certainly worth a purchase.

I had this beer as part of a flight at Perrin Brewery. Nice and thick, felt like a good stout. On the sweeter side. Definitely has a chocolate mocha taste to it. Very good overall.

A - Pours black with a two finger tan head. The head dissapates quickly leaving a nice amount of soapy lacing.

S - Aroma is roasted malts, coffee and dark chocolate.

T - Upfront the flavor is chocolate, vanilla, and bourbon. The backend has some light coffee and roasted malts that add a nice balance.

M - Medium balanced with medium carbonation. Soft creamy mouthfeel with a dry sticky finish.

O - This was a nice suprise. The flavors are very well balanced. Very drinkable at 8.5%.

Poured into a tulip it is black with a beige head of 2 inches. Smell of bourbon, chocolate, tons of coffee, slight caramel, a good amount of vanilla, and a little bit of roasted malt. Taste is bitter roasted malt, slight vanilla, chocolate, slight coffee, some light bourbon, slight oak, and a bit of alcohol on the end. Mouth feel is a tad bit oily and full with a full body as well and a slight creamy moderate carbonation. A nice barrel aged beer for the price ($11.99?) , but not a ton of barrel flavor and a not as complex as I'd hoped.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass; no bottle dating, but was just released this month. Listed at 8.5% on the bottle. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, molasses, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, oak, light dark fruit/herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of roast/bready malt and moderate bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, molasses, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, oak, light dark fruit/herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, dark bread, molasses, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, oak, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt and moderate bourbon barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors with minimal yeast notes present. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and slightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent imperial Schwarzbier style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt and moderate bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth and easy to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
