this is the beer all the paradox loyalists keep telling me i need to try, that it will change my mind on them, and that its the best of their portfolio. i disagree, they have far better beers than this one, although i suppose its unfair to judge it a year or so after it was released, i am sure its changed a lot, like all of their beers do. this one is a darker brown type, sour as heck, and loaded with dried cherry aroma and flavor, nice and tart. it looks and smells and tastes like an oud bruin with cherry, totally pleasant sour bacterial acidity and mellowing oak. the only thing that is weird for me is that is claims to be a bock beer, which are traditionally lagered, and if this thing was brewed with lager yeast, it was done at rather high temperatures, because it exhibits basically none of the standard lager yeast characteristics. not to its detriment though, it doesnt miss them, but they just arent there. the cherry flavor is really tart in the finish, and the thin brown base is undercarbonated. more bubbles would help this beer a lot, but so would a more dynamic yeast complexion. the sour is there, but there is no other belgian or bretty aspects, despite the labels claims. i am most critical of its mouthfeel, the flavors actually work pretty well together. i would say this one is worth trying if you are a paradox fan and can still find one. if not, dont worry, you arent missing much.

--If you're looking for a dark, malty, and sweet Dopplebock look elsewhere--

A- Pours murky reddish brown with a thin head.

S- Sour cherries, oranges, and prunes, with a light malt background and some woodiness and faint spice.

T - Balanced; sweet and fruity yet sour and a bit grainy.

MF- strikingly similar to a champagne, it's crisp, fizzy, and quite dry.

O- it is well balanced, complex, a bit muddy, and is superb alongside food (I had it with a thyme-liver pate on whole wheat bread and a dandelion & spinach salad with balsamic vinaigrette).

As a final note, I would say it tastes a heck of a lot more like a kriek than a dopplebock and since I've been pretty disappointed with most krieks, this is a great alternative. Of the Paradox beers I've tried, I will say that they tend to make beers that taste of wine and wild fermentation rather than the typical beer style that they're labeled under. Bravo!

Bottle 660 of 1200

The beer poured out a hazy, muddy reddish-brown with a thin yet persistent head. Sour cherries, alcohol, and a slight malt character detected in the aroma. Sour and tart fruit flavors abound with a light biscuit malt background. Mouthfeel was rather effervescent, dry and crisp.

Well, this is another interesting beer from Paradox, but not one of my favorites. I'm sure that more-or-less hit their mark with the fruity doppelbock flavor, but the fizzy, weak feel left a lot to be desired. I probably won't go for another bottle, but it was worth the experience if only for the novelty of this style.

The beer pours a dark and deep red brown color with a small tan head.

The aroma is a mixture of cherries, caramel, dark fruits, very malty, no hops are present in the aroma. There is a lot of roast and dark malt also, some alcohol.

The beer tastes of cherries, very fruity, some alcohol, dark malt flavors like rum come through as well. Fairly well balanced leaning towards the sweet side but not at all cloying.

The mouthfeel is medium, the body is good.

Overall this beers is very tasty. I really like the way the cherries play with the dark malt. The beer is simple enough to let the fruit shine through and everything is well balanced.
