Pours a clear light gold, raises a massive pile of foam, bright white, dense, with a meringue-like sheen. Excellent retention with good lacing on the glass.

Aroma is sweet pastry dough with a mix of apples and pears. A light touch of herbal hops and very slight diacetyl round it out. The fruitiness is unexpected, but pleasant, partially from esters and partially a synergy of hops, malt, and alcohol. Fermentation character seems pretty clean and the suggestion of apple is not from DMS.

Flavors are immediately balanced. Bready malt with a touch of spice. Firm bitterness, more than expected for the style and very well balanced. A light herbal hop flavor runs throughout. Honey candy sweetness going into the medium dry finish with a little lingering bitterness and some mild alcohol vapor.

Body is medium full with moderate carbonation. A little sticky. Some mild warming alcohol, not at all hot, just a gentle suggestion of the power in this beer.

Overall a very nice beer, well executed. I'm not sure about the idea of a "helles doppelbock" but it works very well as a strongish maibock. Shows a good expression of pilsner malt. Drinkable for a beer of it's strength but with just enough complexity and warmth to demand substantially more consideration than the average fizzy yellow beer.

22oz bomber: This one pours a clear yellow color. There was a bit of a white foamy head on it that leaves some lacing. The aroma is OK. A bit of sweetness to it, with some breadiness. Maybe some faint banana in there. The taste is pretty good. A bit of dryness and no sweetness. A touch thin for an 8% beer. Some malts, a hint of spices. OK, but I expect more in an 8% beer.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on April 19, 2014.

The pour is pale yellow with a quick-lived white head.

The aroma is more like a pilsener with its toasted biscuit malt character, odd fruitiness, and a clean, crisp hop note.

The body is light and refreshing. This would might be a halfway decent lawnmower beer.

The taste is also rather biscuit and bready-like with a clean crisp hop finish. It is 8% ABV but you wouldn't know it.

12oz bottle poured into a mason jar.

A - Clear urine yellow, faint head and lacing.

S - Sweet, bready. Yeasts?

T - Ahh. This is Side Pocket with a little bit more hops and lot less alcohol.

M - It seems thin at first but there is something clingy about this brew that makes it linger on the tooth.

O - A good get drunk. However, this camp will still rely on Side Pocket for that.
