Enjoyed this one in a 22 oz. bomber. Very good attempt at a big Belgian by Abita. The decal reminded me of climbing up from the base to the tower in Rocamadour in Southern France.

A: large candy glass brown bottle with ornate decal on the front. Pours a nutty red with not much head but what there was hung around. Light lacing.

S: Smelled great, of wet green hay, sugary nougat and citrus.

T: Hints of dried plums and mango, dark sugar with a decent amount of sweetness. Wet finish. No hops bite and alcohol is very sweetly masked.

M: Medium bodied, micro-carbonated for easy drinking. No hops bite/aftertaste, no alcohol sting.

D: Refreshing. The alcohol is so well hidden that it's a dangerous drinker. One bomber left me pretty much buzzed.

22-oz. bottle into a Maredsous glass (which I'm gonna call a chalice, for lack of more precise terminology)

a - almost disconcertingly clear. amber with a very thin film of head that slowly dissipates

s - nice fruity, bready esters come right up at you out of the glass

t - some classic Belgian-style flavors come through. sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. a hint of tartness from the yeast and the darker malt flavors balance it out, and there's a mild touch of spice in there.

m - sufficiently viscous with some warming, drying sensations at the end from the alcohol. carbonation stops well short of fizziness.

d - tasty, balanced, and enjoyable. not exactly transcendence in a glass, but well worth the price of admission. definitely a food beer, not a stand-alone sipper. called Abbey Ale, but described as a Dubbel on the bottle. at 8% ABV, I'm inclined to go with the latter. I'll make it a point to share a bottle with a fellow beer dork who only thinks of Abita in terms of Purple Haze or Turbo Dog (as I most certainly did prior to drinking this).

Large bottle, with nice artwork etched onto the bottle, a decent deal at $4.99 purchased from Big Z bev on good ole Long Island, NY. Pours muddy chocolate/brownish amber, khaki short lived head, but leaving plenty of sheeting and fine lacing. Sweet dubbel, with light chocolate, toffee and malty notes. Ripe fruit adds some complexity. Nothing special, just an easy drinking beginner friendly Belgian style brew, with a well hidden 8% jolt

Appearance: copper in color, cloudy, 1 inch head, high carbonation

Smell: toasted malt, banana, and bread

Taste: bread, banana, hops, alcohol, and caramel

Mouthfeel: smooth, high carbonation, sweet start and end with a bitter spike in the middle, medium-light bodied

Drinkability: I really love the way Abita tackles bigger beers. this is nice and malty. I like the flavor combos. It is a very clean, bready beer that I will have again.

First time with this brewer. Poured a clear copper with a big, creamy white head. Decent lacing. Sweet yeast and herbal aroma, with a malty gingerbread scent. Thick, but not syrupy, mouthfeel. Stronger than expected in the spiciness; again, like gingerbread. A noticeable clove and banana flavor as well. Turns sweet and fruity towards the finish. No heavy malt or sugar flavors I expected with a dubbel. Leans more towards a trippel in spice and yeast. I liked it.

22oz bomber poured into an Abita pint glass.

Pours a nice deep mahogany/brown with a big two finger really nice and fluffy head. Nose is a bit fruity with some sweet citrus and a hint of booze.

Taste is vert trappist-like. Has some nice sweetness, light raisin hints and sweet maltiness. Nice light mouthfeel and carbonation, it's present but not over the top.

Nose: dark sugars - caramel to toffee, fruit, hint of anise, pepper.
Pours rich auburn with a slight have under a moussey 1" persistent lightly tan tinted foam cap.
Palate: equally malt and yeast driven. The malt flavors are a complex of caramel to rich toffee supported by yeast driven dark fruit flavors that are spiced with light pepper and a hint of anise. The toffee lingers long into the aftertaste. Very light hop accent.
The creaminess of the body gives it a medium full feel. The fine carbonation works very well with the rich malts which are balanced by the yeast and alcohol flavors.

220z bomber. Pours an amber color topped with a frothy 3 finger head with good retention. The aroma is extreme malt accented by a variety of sweet fruits. It sits solidly on the tongue, well balanced, not too sticky on the finish, the alcohol is present but not overbearing. A sold effort by Abita.

First of all, let me say that I am very happy to see these new "special" bombers from Abita. I really want to like Abita brews, but none of the regular 12oz beers have stood out in my mind. Sadly, they just don't make me want to buy them again. Well, with the new, 22oz brews, hopefully that'll change.

The Abbey Ale pours with a decent head and looks nice. The aroma is a bit off-putting, though. I appreciate the phenolic character of some Belgian yeasts, and there's some of that "goodness" in this brew, but there's also some bad phenols as well. (For reference, I would say Chimay red or blue has a very good phenolic character.) The taste is better than the aroma, but the "bad" phenols are still there. This is an interesting attempt at an Abbey ale and one that almost works, but ultimately it needs more finesse. Much like the Andygator, the flavors in this brew don't quite gel and makes me think the recipe needs more time to work out the kinks. Well, to be honest, I had Andygator a number of years ago when it was still draft-only. I thought it was "odd...if not off" back then, and I still think it tastes the same in the new bottled form. Odd... Whatever the case, this Abbey Ale is a better Abita beer than most other Abita brews out there. Hey Abita, I'm still pulling for you. Seriously, keep trying with the special release bomber series. I still have faith that you guys can make some killer brews!

Really neat artwork on the painted bomber bottle. Hazy honey ochre colored with a two inch high thick orangey-beige head of foam that settles out slowly leaving broad sheets of lace as the glass tilts.

Rich aroma of dried fruit, sweet bread, raisins and marmalade, some yeast and clove notes.

The lovely aroma is betrayed by the shallow flavor, heavy on cloves and yeast, some peppery spiciness, maybe some molasses, but also an acrid flavor and a heavy metallic note. Seems a dubbel would have more malty depth.

Mouthfeel is thin, lacking body. Great to see something so unexpected from Abita, but could use more complexity and depth of flavor IMO.

First off where did they get these bottles they are so sturdy the glass is heavy as hell. Pours slightly clouded blood burgundy amber hue with a large off white beige head forms fine even lacing, carbonation is not overdone. Silk screened labels with nice artwork including an Abbey with hop vines scattered, I like even though the color spectrum is a bit dull.

Aromatics give off tart grape/raisins with a nice cherry finish, mild banana and spicy yeast traits kickin' as well. A touch of dark caramelized malts as well with the alcohol not really coming through thus far.

Flavor more tart slightly nutty, Belgian yeast strain phenols giving off a funky blend of flavors with an herbal spicy finish. Upfront sweet/tart sensations from raisins/banana/and tart apples. Again alcohol is well hidden this beer is a must try and it's very affordable for a bigger beer I've seen it range from 3.99 to 7.99 with each price in that range being extremely worth it.

Mouthfeel, works not as effervescent as some Belgian dubbels and not as cloying with residual candi sugars as some American brewed doubles. Sturdy carbonation not overdone at all carries the medium to full body well, some residual sugars to hit but not to the screaming bloody diabetes levels.

Drinkability overall is quite enjoyable and for anybody with an interest in Abita it's nice to see the transformation from where I started drinking their brews almost ten years ago to the post Katrina professional machine that Abita has become with effective distribution and adventurous new big beer lineup coming out. This is the second in that classification, I'm sad to say that I missed the helles doppelbock Andygator.

My first review on BA, forgive me if it's not as accurate. I'm still learning how to pick up the "fruity" tastes in beer, so if those are omitted, it does not mean that such flavors are lacking.

Poured the bottle into a glass - had two completely different experiences based on how fast I drank it.

First glass was consumed quickly - before the head had a chance to recede. Lacing was amazing, but the bitterness of the beer really overwhelms the pallate if you don't take the time to savor it. Second and third glasses were slower. Lacing still quite good, although the head fades faster than I would have liked. The booze isn't too evident, which is something I like. Caramel definitely present and maybe a hint of a non-citrus fruit...

On to form:

A: Beautiful amber color. I normally prefer the look of darker beers, but this isn't bad. Head's great and leaves good lacing.

S: The smell is the strongest indicator that this is a beer with a heavy emphasis on malt. Yeasty, but not terrible. Slight caramel aroma as well.

T: The taste isn't evident at first, but here the sweet and bold flavor comes through as it warms. If ever there was a chocolate taste, it is here. Very dark and robust.

M: The ale's strongest point, in my opinion, is its mouthfeel. It's heavy but not cumbersome, definitely feels like an ale.

D: The first drink I accidentally swallowed without tasting - something about this drives you to swallow without savoring, but it also leaves some sort of odd aftertaste. Although it disappears quickly and leaves with a final pleasant aroma, something is a bit off here. It's not enough to ruin the overall experience, and is still a worthy beer to try out.

Picked this up at Green's on Ponce in Atlanta.

Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a one-finger off-white head. The head recedes slowly into a thin pancake on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of sugar-coated pears with hints of bananas and raisins. As the beer warms some spices come out.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Very sweet up front with hints of pears and raisins. Very mild spices come out as the beer warms.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got solid carbonation and a nice thickness.

Drinkability is good. This is a bit too far on the sweet side for me, but I still finished my glass without a problem.

Overall this is a solid dubbel and one of the better Abita brews I've had, worth a shot.

Once again Abita does a nice marketing job but the bottle contents don't match expectation.

The mahogany color with some cloudiness match the style. The head is quite full at first but dissipates quickly.

The taste is a little too winey for me and the style.

The mouth is medium bodied and it finishes with a hint of tartness and some alcoholic tones given the 8% abv.

Have to give it a bit of credit given the price compared to other brews that claim to be abbey type ales. I guess a nice try but I wouldn't introduce a newcomer to the style with this brew.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, deep, dark mahogany color, with a quarter of a finger of white head that quickly dissolved into a lacing of foam that partially covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic with lots of bready, toasted malt imparting notes of freshly baked French baguettes as well as aromas of Belgian yeast, which imparts aromas of spices, such as clove, cardamom, and black pepper. There are also notes of candied sugar and lots of dried fruit such as raisins, prunes apricots, and currents. Smells delicious!

Taste: Wow! That’s a delicious beer! Strong flavors of toasted malt, candied sugar and stone fruit up front, imparting bready, sweet fruit flavors, followed by lots of spices of clove, orange peel, black pepper and a touch of ginger. Delicious!

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and nicely effervescent as there’s some good carbonation to tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of 8.0%, there is just a hint of alcohol warmth on the palate.

Overall: This is an excellent, spectacular beer! One of the best American-made Belgian Abbey/dubbel I’ve had, actually. Malty, fruity, earthy, sweet, funky, delicious! Highly recommended!

First off, I'm pretty new to the craft beer scene (and this is my first review). After trying several Belgian Trappists, and a couple American versions of the style (such as Ommegang Abbey Ale, which is one of my favorites so far), I had high hopes for this beer.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a chalice. At first glance, the beer looks great--a dark reddish brown, with a full thick head. However, that's about all the good I have to say about this beer.

The first thing I noticed that I was disappointed with was the smell. It smells sour, like rancid fruit. This caused me to temper my expectations a bit, but I shrugged and gave it a shot.

The taste is basically just how it smells, except stronger. I'm trying, but its difficult to find something good to say about the flavor of this beer. The higher alcohol content (8%) is hidden well, but honestly, I would prefer more of an alcohol flavor over the sickeningly sweet and sour taste that permeates this beer.

As for drinkability, Abita Abbey Ale has little of it. I managed to get through half the bottle (which I consider an accomplishment) before I had to pour it out. In addition to the offensive taste, it refuses to sit well in my stomach as well.

Sorry to those who enjoyed it, but I didn't care much for this beer. I won't be having it again.

22oz bomber, from a lovely co-op in Boise, Idaho, earlier this year. The label imagery somehow evokes my latent literary memories of Cajun country...

This beer pours a hazy dark rusty amber hue, with three fingers of tight foamy pale beige head, which leaves a decent high-hanging, low-drooping ring of lace around the glass as it recedes. It smells of sweet caramel, a meaty nuttiness, mild earthy yeast, and some soft dark fruit. The taste is bready caramel malt, raisin and generic black fruit, some mild clove and white pepper spice, and mild earthy hops. The carbonation is quite mild, the body a solid medium weight, and more or less smooth. It finishes a fair shake off-dry, sweet winey caramel still holding sway, the yeast and hop drying offset having readily fucked off (I've just read the Preacher series, if anyone is so wondering...)

My first beer from Bayou country, and well, they've done justice to the Belgian tradition, is all I can say. The sweetness could sure use some further counterbalance, but, for the time being, I sure ain't fixin' to complain...

A dark, amber-brown color, the head fizzles out fast and is gone pretty quick but in classic Belgian-style fashion the center is full of life and remains bubbly for the session.

The aroma has tangy, citric fruitiness, sour yeast, smoked maple ham, wild sour green grape effect...really very nice.

This is a light, crispy and jazzy feel just as it should be with a medium feel from good malt complexity that has brown sugar, maple syrup, balanced by a wonderfully dry-earthy crispness. all aspects are bold and enjoyable. not as lush feeling as some other very high quality Dubbles but it's pretty nice.

This is a rather excellent American brwed Belgian style. I really appreciate this one because this was the very first style of beer I ever brwed.

Poured from a 22 oz. brown bottle into a clear tulip glass.

Appearance: Hazy deep golden/apricot color with a one finger tan foam head. Left good sticky lacing behind.

Smell: Sweet, yeasty and fruity. Aromas of plums, raisins, clove, nutmeg and sweet caramel.

Taste: Sweet, yeasty and spicy. Good yeast phenols that have tangy twang of raisins and prunes, with good spice notes of clove and nutmeg. Very fruity with low hops and bitterness. A very good American interpretation of the Belgian Dubbel style.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, moderate carbonation, finishes a bit dry and sticky, which is OK for the style.

Drinkability: Very good. As a fan of Belgian Dubbels and BSPA's, I like this one a lot. Could easily session with it, and the big bottle was gone quick. I would buy this again when I'm in the mood for the style, and the price was good (under $8).

Well, I love the silk-screened 22 oz bottle. Nice graphics, nice earthy colors. This one and the Andygator look great, and I'm sure it will help to sell the beer.

It pours a hazy, very deep crimson and orange accented chestnut brown beneath a full cap of frothy off-white foam. The head retention is really quite good, and it leaves solid walls of creamy lace about the glass! Quite nice.

In the nose it's sweetish with notes of dark candy sugar, light caramel, and dried dark-skinned fruits... plum, raisin, date perhaps fig... a very minor hint of nuttiness... some minor clove from the yeast adds to it's sticky dark-fruit sugariness.

It's a little sweet initially, but after a few sips your palate adapts to it and it smooths out. Everything noted in the aroma carries over along with a little bit of spiciness from the yeast (and perhaps the alcohol as well - but clearly the yeast, White Labs WLP550 Belgian Ale Yeast). There's a suggestion of very light cocoa or chocolate but it never really comes through. The caramel is there, but the cocoa is just a very light dusting. Leafy hops, on the other hand, make a solid appearance; and a firm bitterness lies beneath the phenolic-sweet malt bed. It finishes drying as the alcohol washes away the residual malt sweetness and the spiciness is left behind with hints of leafy hops here and there. There's a minor note left behind that's reminiscent of red wine, but the clove and spice mostly disguise that (I'm not sure if that's good or bad - I'd like to see that vinous note more towards the front with a bit of dark fruit and chocolate); and on the down side, there's a bit of a vegetal note that runs through it, ever so slightly up-front, but which becomes more amplified in the finish. Odd. It's not too offensive though.

Overall it's a really nice abbey-style beer. A little bit more depth of character to the maltiness (perhaps a stronger hint of cocoa or soft milk chocolate?) would be great, and a tighter focus on the balance (softening the bitterness in the finish, and smoothing the sweetness at the outset - eliminating the minor vegetal note) would make this quite nice. Drinkable though! The alcohol is pretty well cloaked. Worth trying.

A- Pours a dark reddish brown color with a light tan colored head.

S- The aroma is dark ripe fruits with bananas, cloves and other spices and some yeast.

T- The taste like the aroma suggests features a lot of bready malt and dark fruit (raisins and plums) with some spices. There is a touch of hops in the finish as well as some alcohol.

M- The mouthfeel is in between light and medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

D- Overal, I am very impressed with this beer. It has definitely exceeded my expectations. Recommended!

Poured this from a 22oz bomber into a tulip glass, it has a copper hazy color and lots of off white head.

Smells of citrus and some malt evident, raisin and other similar fruits in the background. The taste is mostly malt and caramel. Very sweet with a sourness at finish.

The mouth is light but also somewhat syrupy at beginning, with a drier finish. This is a nice sipping beer but about average IMHO.

Dark amber color with a cream-colored head.

Aroma is malt, dark fruits, caramel, and brown sugar.

Flavor is more of the same, with raisin/fig notes and some banana/clove.

Medium body with a dry finish.

Pretty average Belgian dubbel.

22 oz bottle cost me $4.95, poured into the widest wine glass I own (took about 3 pours to finish the bottle).

Dark-maraschino cherry red body with a a sticky beige head. Good retention. Lively carbonation with bubbles still visibly rising to the top.

Rich in the nose with warm phenolic yeast, fruity & spicy esters. Hard candy, sticky sweetness. Overripe banana. Fragrant, burnt brown sugar & toasted vanilla. At 8%, this brew hides the booze exceptionally well.

Crisp and prickly up front with toasted notes, yeasty sweetness, spicy hops, clove, leaf texture. Very smooth hops bitterness washes away nicely with a friendly yeast flavor that lingers. Hangs around like a tasty wine, only better. Grows creamy as it warms. Depth & character shines through this one.
