Abbey Ale honors the ancient tradition of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery and their "liquid bread". We offer up our support and thank them with a 25¢ donation to St. Joseph's Abbey with every bottle sold of this heavenly brew. Dark amber in color, the aroma of caramel, fruits and cloves invites you to contemplate the creamy head of this "Dubbel" or double ale. Abita Abbey Ale is a malty brew, top-fermented and bottle aged to rapturous perfection.

A: Pours a slightly hazy, deep orange-amber color. The head is extremely large, fairly dense, and frothy, with a light tan color. Retention is very good, and lacing is rather attractive.
S: Robust doses of bready malt, tangy yeast, and pure table sugar up front. Definite fruity notes as well - some banana and cherry. Some musty, slightly phenolic spice and a clove aroma also.
T: Firm, rather sweet bready malt flavor up front. Followed by some bitterness in an spicy/herbal sense. Fruit flavors tend more toward plum and cherry than banana, somewhat in contrast to the nose. Spicy cloves and phenolic yeast is also available, along with a measured kick of alcohol into the finish.
M: Medium-full in body, with moderate, tingly carbonation. Nearly bone-dry into the finish. Less sticky-sweet than I was expecting.
D: I've been pretty underwhelmed by most of Abita's brews so far, but this is a respectable American shot at a Belgian Dubbel. Easy to drink and visually appealing. For $3.99 a bomber, not too hard on the wallet either.

From a bomber marked best by 1/11/17. Pours a semi-opaque copper color with a finger of fluffy white head. Smell is slightly sour with rich malt aromas. I'm already excited! Airy feel with the right amount of carbonation. Taste has dark fruit flavor up front followed by a rich malt and nut body. Very good beer, this one has the feel of a Belgian-made Dubbel, which is a big compliment for an American brewery.
