My second beer of Christmas 2012, Poured from a bomber into a Westmalle Chalice (wishful Dubbel thinking?)

A: Pours a nice dark chestnut mahogany, pretty clear with a bit of turbidity. Nice one to two finger vanilla head which receded relatively quickly to a cap. Some spotty lacing.

S: I got the nose from a meter away during the pour, Sweet yeasty bread smells with some dark stone fruit and vanilla smells. Actually smells delicious, with no phenol and very little alcohol on the nose.

T: Very nice tasting beer, pretty consistent with the nose. I would classify this as pretty sweet for a Dubbel, with a lot of sweet , yeasty raisin bread or even cinnamon roll flavors. A bit of vanilla. obviously plenty of caramelly malt and some dark fruit overtones. Less cherry tartness and not as boozy as some reference Dubbels. Flavors are not that dissimilar from some winter warmers. Overall, I found it quite enjoyable. Not obvious that it's an 8% ABV.

MF: Carbonation was a little less than a fresh Westmalle, or other true Dubbel. The beer coated the tongue and mouth nicely, but I found the finish to be a little lacking. The mouthfeel just kind of fades away. Not distractingly so, just not really the strong point of this ale.

Overall, I found this to be quite a nice beer, and I am usually hit or miss on Abita brews. For $4.99 , this is a pretty good bargain and a very enjoyable beer. Very drinkable in a holiday / Christmas environment. (1,450 characters)

22oz bottle poured into a goblet.

A - Amber in color with good clarity. Pours with a medium, vanilla colored head which recedes to a small cap of foam. Left little specs of lace.

S - Getting more of a tart cherry than a sweet red fruit quality. Some clove notes. Moderately rich nutty caramel tone with a layer of chocolate.

T - Very rich in its sweet caramel maltiness. Distinct nuttiness to it. Little bit of fruitiness. Finishes very dry with a pleasant warmth of alcohol.

M - Dry, medium to medium-full body, moderate to high carbonation.

O - Good looking beer, smell seemed a little disappointing. I expected a little more dark fruit, maybe some esters. Huge flavor but lacking a solid red fruit quality. Excellent feel, from sweet to dry and with an enjoyable amount of alcohol. (791 characters)

For 5 bucks for a 22oz bottle I have no complaints about this beer. Have i had better abbey beers? Why of course , this one is special in its own way though. I love new belgium abbey , and this one doesnt compare in the same reasons I like it , it has its own special space in my life though. Do not purchase it and think that you are getting a high end superior beer , but if you want to bring your friends along who think bud light and miller lite are the only beer made this might be the one to introduce them to in my opinion , I could drink this while grilling burgers and brats and just enjoy the crap out of life (619 characters)

Finally back to reviewing after a bit of a break (OK, like a year). I decided to start back now that higher quality beers are now available in MS. Poured from a 22 oz bomber into a Yazoo pint glass.

A: Pours a clean mahogany, completely clear. The head is off-white and pretty fluffy. Very mild lacing. No real sign of bubble streams (which is odd considering the mouthfeel).

S: The aroma of dark, sweet bread is the overwhelming note here. I don't really get any fruit notes that I would expect from a Belgian style, nor do I sense any hop aroma at all. It pretty much has a standard "beer" smell, just amped up with some darker malt.

T: Ah, there's the fruit. The backbone of this beer is all about raisin bread. Lots of dark fruit, a little bit of caramel, and maybe even cinnamon. It's pretty sweet and a little buttery on the sides of the tongue. As with the aroma, the hops don't really show up to the party.

M: A little light on the palate for an 8% beer. This beer seems to be a little too heavily carbonated for my liking (I don't think it's bottle conditioned). Also, there's almost no finish. The taste and feel of the beer just "end" at the middle of the tongue.

O: Abita Abbey Ale is enjoyable if not challenging. I think Abita did justice to the dubbel style, and it's cool that they donate profits to a local abbey. In sum, I think some extra work with the recipe could tweak this into an amazing beer. (1,422 characters)

Poured from 22 ounce bomber into a pint glass.

Pours reddish amber, good foam. Full 1/2 inch at initial pour. Dark fruit aroma, and clove too. Candi sugar. Caramel malt, with fruitiness. Yeasty. Plums. Quite bready. Ever so slight bitter at the close.

Very nice blend, and sounds like a worthy cause to boot. (311 characters)

Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass

A: Clear amber with a tan one finger head that lingers. Big bubbles hang around the abbey. I give it a four for the excellent abbey etching on the bottle.

S: Belgian yeast, caramel, malt and cloves.

T: A strong start. Dark fruit emerges with cherries and dates. Malts slide in to pray. Sweet caramel begs forgiveness. Cloves round out this holy nectar with a subtle, dry finish. Alcohol closes the door to the monastery with a silent, monk-like buzz.

M: medium, creamy. Good body. Really coats the tongue.

O: I'm really quite impressed. Abita got it right! This is one of my new favorites from the brewery. Will definitely drink again. (685 characters)

A: Pours a clear, dark amber with a creamy off-white head that recedes fairly quickly.

S: Aromas of caramel, cream, and baking spices fill the nose. Pleasant, but lacking depth and complexity, the nose of this ale is superficially reminiscent of a Belgian dubbel or dark ale, but is rather one-dimensional.

T: Notes of caramel, dark bread, raisin, prune, allspice, clove, rosewater, and bitter chocolate fill the mouth and linger on the palate. The finish is malty and spicy with bread, clove, raisin, and prune notes that are very reminiscent of prune cake.

M: Medium in body, firm, and very dry. Carbonation is crisp. Alcohol presence is subtle. To me, this feels a bit thin and watery compared to most Belgian dubbels.

O: This is a step in the right direction for Abita, but some tweaking is required to bring this ale up to snuff. The nose is very one-dimensional and the body feels a bit thinner than it should. While this ale may taste like a dubbel, it doesn't particularly smell or feel like one. A worthy effort that has produced mediocre results... (1,062 characters)

Poured from bottle into tulip shaped glass

Appearance – Pours a rusty red-brown color. Upon pouring there is a huge thick foamy tan head that forms. It persists for some time giving way to some very nice lacing.

Smell- Sweet fruit aromas abound. Apple and tropical fruits of banana and mango are the most potent. There is a bit of caramel and breadiness mixed in with the fruits as well. All in all, the aroma is quite potent and quite pleasant.

Taste – It starts out with the fruit depicted in the nose. The apple and banana are the thickest and heartiest, but darker fruit and even a little bit of caramel are present and become more prevalent toward the middle of the taste. The taste experience finishes with a bit of a roasty and bready maltiness with a lingering bit of fruit and caramel sweetness.

Mouthfeel – Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. The body is a little bit thin for the abv and style and the carbonation a bit too high.

Overall – Other than the mouthfeel, the beer really has very nice characteristics. It has a nice sweeter fruit profile mixed with a nice malty backbone. A fairly good sweeter dubbel. (1,153 characters)

Notes from 3/3/12

22 oz bottle cost me $4.95, poured into the widest wine glass I own (took about 3 pours to finish the bottle).

Dark-maraschino cherry red body with a a sticky beige head. Good retention. Lively carbonation with bubbles still visibly rising to the top.

Rich in the nose with warm phenolic yeast, fruity & spicy esters. Hard candy, sticky sweetness. Overripe banana. Fragrant, burnt brown sugar & toasted vanilla. At 8%, this brew hides the booze exceptionally well.

Crisp and prickly up front with toasted notes, yeasty sweetness, spicy hops, clove, leaf texture. Very smooth hops bitterness washes away nicely with a friendly yeast flavor that lingers. Hangs around like a tasty wine, only better. Grows creamy as it warms. Depth & character shines through this one. (788 characters)

Poured into yet another plastic cup at the cheap Econo Lodge next to the Culture Room. No freshness date.

A- From a heavy pour comes a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains a bit before becoming an 1/8 inch ring around the edge of the cup, frosty lacing and plentiful surface foam.

S- Mildly sweet cereal grain followed by even milder Belgian yeast aroma.

T- Wow. "liquid bread" indeed. Heavy bounce of malt along with deep tones of Belgian yeast. Some blunt alcohol burn that lasts too long for an 8% ABV. Caramel, fruit and cloves as promised but aren't used very effectively

M- The beer's main flaw. Dry, sharp and searing from the booze. Medium-low carbonation.

O- Pretty off-balance in general, but it's drinkable and there should be something to be said for that...right? (781 characters)

Poured into a brandy snifter. Pours deep copper with an off-white two finger head. The smell is of sugar, fig, and malt. I pick up malty sweetness in the taste as well as cinnamon and fig. It has a dry finish and this is not much bitterness, but the hops are definitely present. The bread flavor also comes out in this beer. The taste is complex and well-balanced. The alcohol doesn't come forward in the flavor at all. Plenty of lacing is left on the glass. The body is on the higher end of medium and the carbonation is moderate, making this a very drinkable dubbel. I have to tip my hat to Abita for creating a solid and very drinkable dubbel. Overall, this is an excellent beer. (682 characters)

Glass - Tulip

A - An amber/coppery colored brew with low visibility. It produced a 2-finger head that looked thick and creamy. The head retention seems to be pretty darn good, and I got a bit of spots and splotches left on my glass.

S - It smells very dry with floral notes and a nice fig/cherry fruit thing going on. I also pick up a subtle vanilla notes underneath the fruit character. It's a bit sour as well, like malt vinegar. As it warmed I also picked up a touch of cinnamon. It smells pretty complex, warming, and inviting.

T - Upfront I get a really nice mix of brown sugar, almonds, cinnamon, and clove. It unfolds into soft malt vinegar tones, and cherry/fig fruit like flavors. It finishes with a touch of banana, low bitterness that helps to balance, and the same malt characters that I mentioned in the first sentence.

M - Medium bodied with soft crispness and a smooth feel.

O - I was surprised how much I liked this beer because I'm not much of a Belgian Ale drinker. I thought the aroma was very nice, and the flavors were good but I would get tired of the vinegar and Belgian yeast flavors after one glass, but that's just me. Overall I thought the beer was good, and it's turned me on to finding other brews of the same style that I might like more.

I'd say definitely give this one a try though. Cheers! (1,329 characters)

Out of a bomber bottle this beer was a clear, copper color with two fingers of khaki colored head. The aroma was a very inviting bouquet of vanilla, Belgian yeast, caramel malt, nuts and hints of bread. The flavors were similar with clear notes of yeast bread and caramel sweetness along with more subdued flavors of figs, pepper, plum, nuts and some spicy hops on the finish. Complex but drinkable and punchy without tasting boozy; balanced, in short. The mouthfeel was smooth, the body medium/full and the carbonation medium/light. It was notably sweet for the style but I have a sweet tooth so this appeal to me. Enjoyable and worth your money. (647 characters)

Overall: Though I'm not a fan of abbey ales, Abita serves one with delightful taste and character; a must try for fans of abbey ales.

Appearance: Dark, foggy red-brown color. Pours a two-finger head. Moderate lace.

Smell: Toffee; caramel; sweetness; malt; vinegar; yeast.

Taste: The tastebuds are overtaken with flavors similar to salted caramel and sour bread mixed as one.

Mouthfeel: Despite a heavy aftertaste, its mouthfeel is light and clean--a likely attribute from the springs Abita brews with.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a cervoise glass. Best before 29 November 2012.

A: Gorgeous, creamy head -- almost two fingers. Ruddy amber-brown, clear in the light which highlights the thin streams of bubbles in the interior. Good lacing. Excellent.

S: Uninspiring. Bready malts and flat Belgian yeast. A touch of fruit.

T: Bizarre, but compelling. What starts out as a typical dubbel-style abbey ale, with medium-dark fruit and yeasty malt -- what you'd expect, in other words -- ends as a burnt popcorn (or roasted peanuts), sour fruit, and tangy...yeast? A bit hard to describe. It's good, but confused and unfocused.

M: Thin, with a peanut dust bitterness. Small carbonation.

O: So I actually liked this beer. I might not recommend it, but I certainly don't mind finishing the whole 22 ounce bottle. Good effort, average result. (842 characters)

Got this bomber at my local Giant eagle $4.49 plus tax

A - Dark amber brown in color with good carbonation. Impressive half inch of head that turns to a fluffy lace ring and very sticky lacing.

S - Very fruity almost like a port wine at times. Good caramel and toffee malt backbone. Impressive.

T - A bit watery but I do get some candied sugars, figs, and mild yeast tones. Almost like a watered down wine to tell you the truth, it's ok.

M - Medium bodied it hides the ABV pretty well with only a slight chalky flavor and slight burn.

Overall I wish this beer tasted as good as it smells but its pretty good for a 5 dollar bomber. Not bad. (644 characters)

750ml into a duvel tulip

pours a beautiful honey amber with a slight creamy looking head

fruity, plums, caramel, and malty goodness

follows the nose almost exactly except you can taste the spices (clove). alittle sweet upfront but balances toward the end.

this dubbel is smooth, creamy, and tasty. not dry and not too carbonated.

spent $5 for this badboy at bevmo. honestly, one of the best american belgian styles i have tried (432 characters)

A - Deep red/mahogony. Good lacing. Nice 2 inch head.

S - Sweet smell of cherries and cinnamon but not overpowering.

T - Lighter than the look but hints of raisen with a good aftertaste. Alcohol is very present but not over the top

M - In my opinion, it is the best part of the beer. Medium carbonation which is exactly where an Abbey Ale should be.

D - It meets all expectation. Not on the level with Chimay or other Monk beers but extremely satisfying.

Overall- As a student of St. Joseph's Seminary, this beer is a source of income for all us all. 25 cents of every bottle goes to monks here at the Abbey in St. Benedict, LA. It's a very drinkable beer that Benedictine Monks of the Catholic Church have learned to perfect worldwide. It is meets all expectations of the art of brewing beer at monasteries. Again, it may not be as great as some of the Trappist Monastery Ales of Europe but it comes close at a better price. Vivat Christus Rex! (951 characters)

Look: Reddish brown with a 1/2 inch tan head and ok retention

Smell: Dark fruits plums and raisins upfront and in full effect with a funky belgian yeast picking up the backend

Taste: Very fruity flavor and to be honest its a bit of a fruit overload. The back end carries a bit of clove and a caramel backbone

Mouthfeel: Slightly less than medium body and ample carbonation

22oz bomber, from a lovely co-op in Boise, Idaho, earlier this year. The label imagery somehow evokes my latent literary memories of Cajun country...

This beer pours a hazy dark rusty amber hue, with three fingers of tight foamy pale beige head, which leaves a decent high-hanging, low-drooping ring of lace around the glass as it recedes. It smells of sweet caramel, a meaty nuttiness, mild earthy yeast, and some soft dark fruit. The taste is bready caramel malt, raisin and generic black fruit, some mild clove and white pepper spice, and mild earthy hops. The carbonation is quite mild, the body a solid medium weight, and more or less smooth. It finishes a fair shake off-dry, sweet winey caramel still holding sway, the yeast and hop drying offset having readily fucked off (I've just read the Preacher series, if anyone is so wondering...)

My first beer from Bayou country, and well, they've done justice to the Belgian tradition, is all I can say. The sweetness could sure use some further counterbalance, but, for the time being, I sure ain't fixin' to complain... (1,075 characters)

Picked up a bottle of this with a little bit of excitement and curiosity. The beer poured out as a light brownish color with a foamy white head on top. The smell of the beer gives off some light floral aromas, Belgian yeast, and some grains in there too. The taste is soft and tasted pretty close to a traditional Abbey Ale. The mouthfeel was soft and smooth. Overall it was a pretty decent brew. I wouldn't need to have it again but I'm glad I tried it. (454 characters)

poured from 22oz bottle into Ommegang goblet

A - pours with a healthy 2 fingers of dense beige foam that slowly subsides to a scant 3mm covering with moderate lacing; the color is a complex of orange, red, and brown - light, reddish chestnut? looks good either way

S - very inviting nose of dried and candied stone fruits, caramelized sugar, yeast, wheat, baking bread...layers going on here

T - like the nose, very inviting on the palate; layers of flavors woven together; more caramel/sugar, dried/candied stone fruits, yeasty notes; hints of baked plum; big sweet malt front to back

M - packs a lot in while still staying a middle-weight; sweetness avoids cloying; CO2 creates a creaminess on the mid-palate; very soft

O - very enjoyable; seems to be straddling the dubbel/tripel line as there is a mid-palate lift and estery-ness that says tripel; really good effort and one I will return to (900 characters)

poured from a 22 to a goblet

Alrighty, the app is as follows... A deep reddish brown, clear chestnut color, with a ton of visible carbonation, and a 2 finger head that lays to a tightly bubbled ring around the top. Big sugary malt on the nose, with a sour fruit scent that gives it a salty olive kinda smell, sugary raisins found all over this beer. The taste is all over the place, from sweet malt, to biscuity malts, to wild cherries, to dark fruits, back to sweet malts. Finishes very well but everything in the middle combines to a big sour climax then back to a sweet finish. Medium on the feel, velvety, sour, high carbonation yet smooth . Overall this is ok, i couldnt shake the olive taste though. Nice for the price as it was only 3 bucks, how can you beat that...? (775 characters)

A 22 oz. bomber to try.

This pours a brownish orange clear body with an off white head that does cling to the glass a little.

Nose is dark fruit, earth and caramel.

Taste is prunes, dark rum, spice. Finish is caramel and some malt. Really nice tasting.

A medium bodied beer with good carbonated bite for the style. Really drinkable and satisfying. (352 characters)
