Notes/Commercial Description:
Turbodog is a dark brown ale brewed with Willamette hops and a combination of pale, crystal and chocolate malts. This combination gives Turbodog its rich body and color and a sweet chocolate toffee-like flavor. Turbodog began as a specialty ale but has gained a huge loyal following and has become one of our flagship brews.

Pours brown with a small tan head, with fair retention and spotty lacing. Smells like toasted malt and nuts. the aroma is light.

Tastes just like it smells with toasted malt and nuts. Just like with the aroma, the taste is too light, and I can detect only a little sweetness.

Medium bodied, average carbonation. Mostly just boring and bland.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a dark burgundy color with great clarity given its shade. I like its head - a three finger light tan color with nice retention, and excellent texturing. Even after a while, it still remains a half finger high, leaving very nice, thick lacing down the side of the glass.

S: Toasted caramel malts and chocolate. Very faint in general - there's nothing wrong with it per se, but it's so aromatically boring.

T: Again, not really flawed, but so damn mild and even watery. Chocolaty sweetness to start, a candylike midtaste, with a vaguely toasted finish. And that's about it. I can chug it, at least.

M: Clean, damn near bone dry, and thin. This makes it super easy to drink, but the watery factor detracts some. Good carbonation.

O: The ultimate in inoffensive beer. There's nothing bad or good here - really, it just exists in the market place like white bread exists in a grocery store. And money no object, would you rather have white bread or the artisanal 9-grain stuff? Thought so.

Meh. Abita tends to make comparatively, uh, less adventurous brews than your average brewery I've experienced. Of course, that probably has a lot to do with the unique diet that exists in Louisiana. Good for a lot of spicy cajun stuff I guess, but i prefer something hoppy with my spicy food, what I digress.

Brownish pour, can't really identify any identifiable aroma or smell. Not the typical chocolate or coffee flavors you might see in darker colored beers. Not really a sweet beer, just kind of bland. Sorry guys.

12 oz bottle from Total Wine

A - Mahogany with a bit of a chocolaty head. Dissipates quickly.

S - Cinnamon, clove, all-spice, and grass.

T - Anise, grass, and earth.

M - Bitter and dry. Very disappointing. :(

D - The smell and color are nice, but the taste and mouthfeel make this beer undrinkable.

This is a deep, dark beer with hints of purple in which a dark, heavenly 3-finger heard sits upon. The nose is a burnt chocolate, a nice fragrance. The mouthfeel is creamy and soft with a mellow coffee flavor. Then there is the taste: It is just not what the fragrance suggests. It is really missing the flavor. Very disappointing. I want to think that I got an old bottle, but I'm not sure, it was swiped away from me before I could look at it.

I may have to give it a second chance.

Served at a restaurant. Maybe it was too cold. As it warmed it changed. Probably would need a second try to really evaluate. Woe is me.

Deep blackness with an amber head that was gone in 60 seconds. It looked inviting.

Picked up something weird on the initial whiff. Then... nothing. As the beer warmed, I got a little chocolate and malt.

Same with the taste. Honestly at first, I got nearly nothing flavor wise. Carbonated, heavy water. Not offensive at all, just completely bland. Warmed up and became better and better. Gone by the time it was finally getting to a reasonable temperature, since I split the bottle.

Dense mouthfeel with decent carbonation. Not overly heavy. Wouldn't mind having another one, but I'm assuming the beer is a little better than I'm rating it.

Poured into a pint glass from 12 oz. bottle. This doesn't look much like a brown ale, dark brown, off white head. Not much aroma at all, faintly like chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate maybe a little carmel. The hops are overwhelmed by the roasted malt. Seems lighter bodied than I would expect and the carbonation really stands out. This beer is worth a try, as it seems a little unusual but it won't be a regular in my fridge.
