I appreciate Abita making special beers and sending them out in uniquely-designed 22 ounce bottles. While none of them are really amazing, they are all very good, and when I saw this S.O.S. at my local place I felt the strong urge to pick it up. Right off with all of these beers stand out from the graphic designs on them. The S.O.S. has "S.O.S." spelled out on it with the letters being made up of fish, birds, crabs, turtles, boats, nets, and even a rubber boot. And the fact that Abita brewed this pilsner because of the recent oil spill in the Gulf makes it sort of more significant as a beer. It has a...purpose more than to just drink it. But it truly does since Abita donates 75 cents of your purchase of the S.O.S., which stands for "Save Our Shores", goes to gulf relief. So, while you're enjoying their great pilsner, you've also helped donate a bit to our buddies on the Gulf Coast. I'm usually not a fan of the lighter beers like lagers or pilsners but this one is an exception.
Save Our Shores pilsner pours to a beautiful clear golden with a bit of carbonation bubbling up from the bottom. The head pours large, frothy, and white. It leaves a lot of lacing as it's drank.
A full intake of its aroma brings up wheat, wheat, wheat! It has a definite bread smell with lemon zest underneath. It's not as substantial as a wheat beer, however.
As stated before I am not a big fan of lighter beers, and many times wheat beers aren't my favorite (even though the S.O.S. isn't a wheat beer), but Save Our Shores is very enjoyable to me. It's clean, refreshing, and extremely drinkable, as a pilsner should be, but unlike so many pilsners put out on the beer market these days, it does not have a skunkiness about it. You can tell that this is a quality beer and not something that was put out to the masses for them to "enjoy" because it's drinkable and light. As with the smell, the taste of wheat is prominent with some lemony zest and a bit of hop spice coming later to finish off the flavor. It doesn't have a lot of carbonation but it's just right.
Save Our Shores pilsner is clean, refreshing, very drinkable, tasty, and a quality brew. The more wheat beer flavor it has adds complexity and makes it more enjoyable. I definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a reasonably priced and great quality pilsner, especially in this hot summer (it was 106 F in Denton last week!). And you're helping the Gulf with the oil spill when you buy it. It's a win-win scenario!
