220z bottle. Pours a cloudy straw color toward the bottom, and darkens into a shade of honey toward the fluffy three-finger head: some decent lacing and strong retention.

It smells of citrus and soap. The echoes that, with just a taste of corn, candy, and delicate hops.

It's light on the tongue with nice citrus notes, and not syrupy before the spike of the sizzling, drier hop finish. It's very drinkable. It's not revelatory, but a well above average pilsener.

Sampled at the brewery in the tasting room before a brewery tour today.

A nice pale gold/dark straw yellow in colour. White head is 1/2 inch on the pour and sticks around for awhile, leaving lines of lacing down the sides.

Aroma is pretty standard german pilsner. Biscuity with a grassy and noble hop background.

Flavour is the same as aroma. Biscuity/bready up front before the grassy/noble hops take over in the finish.

Pretty plain and just ok pilsner. Didn't do anything to grab me. Overall I think Abita's ales are better than their lagers, but that's just my opinion.

Pint at Khyber Pass in Philly. From notes.

A - Poured mildly hazy and golden. Mild carbonation coming up to a two finger white head. Spotty lace and a film of retention.

S - Wheat, grass, a mild hop. Plain, but clean and good..

T - Nice spicy hop with grass and wheat. Orange juice, bubblegum as well. Nice stuff.

M - Good carbonation, medium body, mild bitterness.

O/D - This was a good pils. It was clear that they used wheat in it and it did well with the hop flavour. Good balance and drinkable.

Abita's S.O.S. is a good beer for a good cause, a pleasant and easy-drinking helles bock for recovery efforts from the oil geyser caused by offshore drilling in 2010. This has held up amazingly well over the past two years, still indicating that it was a noiceably-hopped helles bock with pleasing malt flavor. If Abita released some fresh bottles of this into my locality, I'd pick a few up.

Pours a 3cm tall head of off-white foam, comprised of small-sized bubbles yielding a frothy appearance, with excellent retention of several minutes. The head falls to a thin cap of lace atop the body of the beer for the duration of the session, with excpetional lacing of thick, complex patterns left along all sides of the glass, modified with each sip. Beer is a moderately dark golden yellow color, with light bringing out brighter golden yellow hues. Carbonation visible through the hazy (30-40% opacity), high in number, moderate in activity.

Aroma is surprisingly bright and floral with hints of fruit and modestly dense white bread. These are quite pleasant aromas, though more reminiscent of a helles bock than a pilsner (and at 7%, this seems like a justified re-categorization).

Taste is of pleasantly grassy, floral, woodsy, and lemon-like hops with notable white bread and coconut flavors adding interest. Front of palate tastes lightly grassy, floral, woodsy, and lemon-like hops with a background sweetness of white bread and associated dough. Mid-palate tastes floral, grassy, and lemon-like hops with light to medium-light bitterness, bread-like and sweet pale malts, and mild coconut-like flavor behind the scenes adding extra interest. Back of palate tastes hop bitterness with floral and woodsy undertones, a bit of lemon and coconut, and a thin background of white bread. Aftertaste is of mildly bitter hops with light floral and woodsy undertones, light white bread sweetness, and a background hint of lemon.

Beer is medium-bodied, with carbonation of medium, resulting in a foamy (9/10) and slightly smooth (1/10) mouthfeel that comes across as rather soft and pillowy. This is appropriate for the beer, making it pleasurable and easy to drink, and within boundaries for the helles bock style in general.
