"Turbodog is the inspiration for this robust dark ale. It is brewed with generous amounts of pale, caramel, and chocolate malts and Willamette hops. Whole natural vanilla beans are added during the aging process. This combination provides a rich body and color with chocolate, vanilla and toffee-like flavor." Vanilla Doubledog is brewed in the style of an American Strong Ale aged with vanilla beans. Released in conjunction with the brewery's 25th anniversary in 2011, this beer was made available in 22 oz. bottles and on draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a snifter. Served above 56 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pours a frothy crisp coffee cream head over a very dense dark brown body. Retention is good, lacing is light and spotty. The aroma is malt forward with toasted caramel malt, stewed oats and a dash of roasted chocolate joined by a mellow fruitiness of apple for a very accessible, oatmeal-esque aroma. The flavor reflects the toasted caramel and pinch of roast and dry chocolate malt notes with a slightly thinner body- the background lightly hints at vanilla but doesn't make quite enough of an impression to live up to the name. Some mild acidic fruitiness of apple is still as noticeable in the flavor as it was before. The texture is mildly chewy, light and modestly dry, and the carbonation generates a soft crispness for an overall moderately frothy mouthfeel. The body of this beer is shy of medium for the style, medium+ amongst all beer. The balance is very slightly acidic and earthy over sweet. The alcohol presence is low and off characters are minimal. This beer has held up very well and developed quite nicely in the bottle. Vanilla Doubledog is not mindblowingly complex or profound in depth, but I can appreaciate the simplicity and balance of malt characters in this beer. At its grand old age, the vanilla isn't packing quite as much flavor as one might expect, but the flavors have matured into a smooth and consistent malt base with a mellow graininess and acidity rounding out the balance for high drinkability. Quite the simple but enjoyable anniversary ale.

Had this on tap. Review from notes. Poured quite dark amber, with an off white foamy head. Big, sweet, vanilla, caramel, hint of toffee, pretty dark and tasty. The oak comes through more in the finish. Again, pretty sweet beer but not too cloying. I get a good earthy hop finish.
