Our Barleywine is made with generous amounts of pale, red, and caramel malts. These malts give it a deep brown color and intense malt character and flavor. It is hopped in the brewhouse with Apollo, Cascade and Amarillo hops. It is then dry hopped in the aging tank with Cascades. In all we used about 3 lbs of hops per barrel. This blends wonderfully with the flavors from the malt to give the beer a very balanced profile. The result is a brownish colored beer that is very robust, malty, hoppy and flavorful.

Poured from growler into a nonic, hazed opaque reddish brown with some honey highlights.Very nice thick white head that is sooo leggy in the glass with sheets of lacing.

Thick malty caramel sweetness that is not that pronounced, very little hop aromas.

Smooth caramel sweetness that plays well with the fruity alcohol notes and yeast. Firm bittering that balances the sweetness very well. Very limited hop flavor and aroma, prolly due to being at least a year since kegging.

A full bodied brew that has some chew to it, yet is very drinkable. Thick sweet bitter goodness that calls for another. Well played abita, well played.

I am fortunate to have some fine gents properly storing and aging BIG beers here in South Carolina, so huge shout out to them. This might have been a nose hair burner when young, but this seems to have come of age NOW.

Abita Select Barleywine.

Beautiful looking beer. Bright crimson, shining beautifully. Gorgeous, lush head of foam, a large mound of creamy foam, leaving lace. Angelic. Lovely. Exemplary.

Aroma: caramel, fruit, and rather quiet. Nice, but unimpressive.

Taste: Now, here we go. Bright, fresh fruit. mixed with deep, delicious malt. This is a grate cross between the malty English style barleywine and the hoppy American style. Plenty of hops here, much bitterness bracing against the palate, matched with oh, so tasty rich and delicious malty flavor. But, you know what? Really balanced, despite the huge alcohol.

I'd call this one a heavy medium. It's not huge, not obtrusive, not overwhelming, but it is forthright and not shy or withering in any way. This is not timid, and does not characterize a brewery not going all the way with a big, fat, full style like a barley-wine. Putz out on a barley-wine, and we know who you are, dude. This is good one. Plenty of huge, full fruit flavor, incredible multitude, ginormigantic alcoholic stature. Damnittiy, damn, damn. Loads of luscious caramel malt, tons of delectable bitter hops, a perfect match for the high alcohol, and utterly lovely.

I think I like this.
