On tap into a snifter at the brewery.

A-The brew is walnut brown trending towards black. My pour arrives with a very short tan head...more of a cap than a head. A thick collar hangs around for a long time. In a world full of black beers, I enjoyed the brown color.

S-The smell is sweet and full of vanilla, milk chocolate, and a touch of bourbon and caramel. There not much roast or char or smoke. The alcohol is sweet and slightly warming, but not boozy or heavy. I do not pick up much barrel.

T-The taste, which is full of sweet vanilla, reminds me of lightly toasted marshmallow...with just the right amount of golden brown on the outside. It is pretty tasty, but different that what I was expecting (this is not Bomb! or BCS). Aside from the vanilla-marshmallow flavors, there is some milky chocolate and a bit of bourbony caramel and toast.

M-The feel also reminds me of marshmallow...a bit chewy. Chewiness notwithstanding, the body is medium heft and there is a bit of carbonation to keep things from getting cloying.

O-This is a unique beer that features some common ingredients (stout, vanilla, barrel, etc.), but with a slightly different outcome. I enjoyed the play between the vanilla and caramel flavors, and the chewy mouthfeel, which fit the beer well. I'm not sure that I could drink a lot of this, but for small doses, it works.

Pitch black in color with craggy mocha head that faded into a craggy collar and wisps. Aroma is a ton of brown sugar and vanilla. Taste is extremely well balanced between vanilla, sweet oaky bourbon warmth, molasses and a rich roasty malt base. Rich, silty body, and low carbonation.

On tap at the Avery tap-room, served in in a snifter.

It's your basic black imperial stout color, with some light khaki foam floating around on top.

I get licorice, sweet bourbon, and a hint of coffee in the aroma.

It has great milk and dark chocolate flavors, kind of like rich chocolate cake. A smoky, leathury finish.

Nice barrel-aged nuances in this one.

Tasted at the brewery during the 4/19/14 BA social.

Ink black body with a thin head and little rings of lacing on the pint glass. Vanilla and cocoa aromas. Huge flavor with a big, sweet, chocolate and anise character; slight alcohol tone; dark fruits ala dates and figs. Heavy body; rich and smooth mouthfeel.

An intense and well-integrated stout. Outstanding malt sweetness with a nice hop bitterness to balance things. Slightly acidic with a subtle dryness yet still oozing with deep, rich malt goodness. The taste definitely rules on this one.
