Poured from a bottle into a nonic pint.
A - Pours a semi-opaque dark brown/cola color with a creamy, one-finger head which dissipated quickly. Hardly any lacing to speak of.
S - Medium strength aroma of roasted grains, burnt coffee, and unsweetened chocolate.
T - Taste matches the nose; lots of burnt and bitter notes. Some nuttiness in the mid-palate. No sweetness at all. Getting some piney hops in the finish, which do not work well with the overdone burnt/ashy flavor at all. Not very rich or complex, and the end result winds up being kind of underwhelming.
M - Thin bodied, with medium carbonation. Very dry. Too thin to work well with the flavor profile, this could use some beefing up.
O - If you like dry, bitter stouts this might be your thing, but overall I was disappointed. Poor mouthfeel, not very well balanced, and in my opinion could use either some sweetness or richness to balance this thing out. I really like Avery, but not their best effort here.
