Poured from a 12oz can, canned on January 7th 2022

On the pour a nearly 4 finger head pokes out of the top of my pint glass then over 10 or so minutes the head becomes rocky and dissipates to a ring around the glass and a thin covering. The body is pure black and the head is solidly dark tan. Light lacing forms before the head dissipates too much.

Aroma is dark and chocolatey woth a hint of coffee like bitterness with a good amount of ale notes that are mostly covered by roast making a very tradutional stout aroma. Some bittering hops are present in the aroma but they are hard to pick up on as it largely mixes with the ale aroma bringing the beer scent and balancing things nicely.

Flavor follows the smell bringing much more roasty notes making it much more coffee like with a big hit of pure dark malts as well. Right on the front the hops and black malts combine take a roasty semi burnt flavor similar to a dark roast coffee served black with maybe a hint of sugar. As the flavor finishes the malts become more obvious but stay roasty and slightly bitter. This finish sticks around for a bit but the heavy flavors don't over stay their welcome.

The feel is big but not overly thick. The head makes for quite a creamy experience but the body itself maintains a good drinkability without of the heaviness coming from the roasted flavors. Almost velvety in the mouth as you sip from the bubbles forming without being too heavy in the stomach. Dare I say the bitterness at a cool temp brings an almost crisp feel but the darkness also compliments dark cold nights and hearty meals making this solid for all year drinking.

Overall this is a very rounded not overly hoppy American stout. Bitterness is brought by roast and light hopping, but everything blends quite well to make a dark chocolatey mocha malt flavor. Obviously not make woth adjuncts and all the flavor is from yeast malt and hops, which I greatly appreciate. Very good while not being too complicated.

12 fl. oz. bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Pitch black colour, huge tan head. Pleasant roasty aroma, notes of coffee and dark chocolate, some fruity hops, hints of wood. The flavour is moderately roasty with notes of dark malts, coffee and dark chocolate. A moderate but distinct roasty and hoppy bitterness in the finish, balanced by a moderate but sufficient malty sweetness. Good stuff.

This one was interesting in that a) it was furthering my Avery horizontal; b) it was furthering The CANQuest (tm) & c) mine was a CAN (surprise!) where the last review was a Bottle. 8=O

From the CAN: "Experts Only"; "This big, roasty stout takes flavor to the extreme. We aren't afraid to use a ton of roasted barley and a mountain of hops to give this full-bodied stout that little extra something you've been looking for."; "Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, and yeast."

I was very curious to try this one so I Crack!ed open the vent & beCAN a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. It foamed nicely to form two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with very good retention. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44) with cola highlights at the edges. Nose smelled of dried, dark fruit - raisins & prunes; bittersweet chocolate; treacle; anise & caraway. Mmm. Mouthfeel was big, full & creamy, like a dollop had been scooped into my mouth & onto my tongue. The taste was slightly bitter with the anise & treacle really leading the way with the fruit & chocolate as acCANpaniment. Deelish. Finish was semi-dry to dry, not totally dry, but plenty dry enough to keep me happy. YMMV.

Unknown vintage; drank 12/31/14 @ the Yarchives.

Black/brown hue.

HUGE tan head; frothy lace.

Bakers chocolate, oatmeal & spicy hop nose.

Medium thick mouthfeel.

A gross clash of hop bitterness, chocolate & booze heat (?!) in the flavor; a nearly undrinkable mess.

Another bad beer from Avery...

Foam/bubbly head, long lasting, solid lace, the color of dark cold brew. The smell is malt-heavy and sour. This beer's taste itself is soapy and bitter, too hop heavy. This is really just pretentious stout. I'm ultimately unimpressed.

L: Pours a dark brown black color with notes of dark red where the light hits it, with a medium creamy tan head and very little lacing.

S: Dark roasted malt, mixed with notes of coffee, a little chocolate, some peat, earthiness and ash, very nice smelling.

T: Dark roasted malt, earthiness, notes of coffee and bittersweet chocolate, mixed with a light peat and some ash, a light to medium bitterness at the end.

F: Medium body, wish it was slightly creamier.

O: It's been around for a while but this is still a good go to stout.

12 oz bottle poured into a nonic.

A- Deep brown, bordering black. Head is dense and just off-creamy in texture.

S- Sweet caramel and vanilla. Roast. A little bit of a wood character. Faint booze as well.

T- Sweet vanilla roast. Almost a tobacco character comes out.

M- Body is medium full with some slight astringency. Aftertaste is long but enjoyable.

O- Not bad. Solid, not over-the-top stout.

The beer poured a solid brownish-black colour with a thin tan coloured head. Aroma was roasted malt, burnt wood, coffee, and vanilla. Mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was roasted malt, dark chocolate, and molasses. The better of the two beers I had this evening.
