Pours a nice rich black with some crimson color highlights with a huge fluffy almond colored head that sticks nicely to the side of the glass, some roasted malt and nuttiness come thru in the aroma along with a touch of unsweetened chocolate that comes thru more as I drink more.A mellow tasting brew at first but as it warms alot more flavor elements come out some highly roasted malt and some cocoa powder with a lingering dry earthiness in the finish, quite tasty.A smooth creamy-like feel makes this brew very easy to drink, one of the better dry stouts I have had in awhile.

Pours a nearly black color with a bit of light coming through the very edges of the glass. A very dark beer, here. Very fine head that sustained fairly well. Smells heavily of roasted malts, roasted malts, and more roasted malts, with a faint hint of sweetness, resembling bittersweet chocolate or roasted coffee beans. Unfortunately, the smell isn't as "strong" as I was hoping, but it definitely came out a bit more upon warming up. It tasted like you'd expect a stout to taste - roasted malt, toasted barley, faint coffee bitterness, maybe a touch of dark fruit sweetness and black licorice. Didn't taste many hops at all, but there may be a slight hint of them somewhere. Medium body for a stout, but still fairly creamy. Decent amount of carbonation leaving a crisp feeling on your tongue which isn't always commonplace for stouts.

Overall a pretty good beer. There are plenty of stouts out there, and this one doesn't really "stand out" from the rest, but it might be worth a try. Solid, but nothing spectacular.

Nearly opaque black, but has some garnet highlights showing through the body when held to the light. Nice big light chocolate head on top, reduced down in lumps, grabs the glass nicely. A nice foam head stays throughout.

Aroma is nicely filled with dark toasted malts. Some bittersweet chocolate and some hints of coffee come through. Some sweeter malts finish it up. Somewhat light aroma though.

Taste again has lots of dark toasted malts with a bit of black patent type char hanging in there. Fairly bitter overall, finishes with some dark coffee.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Light carbonation. Coats the mouth extremely well and the flavor really lingers. The stickiness of this one in the mouth makes it feel like a really substantial stout.

Nice drinkability, a fair amount of bitterness which is right on for the style but mouthfeel isn't overly thick and heavy. Sits light on the stomach. Something I could come back to often since the ABV is low but the flavor is still there. A true to style irish dry stout, and beats guiness by a mile.

Fairly decent beer/stout. Nice and bitter with a good amount of roast to it.

Very dark with a tan head.

I would buy this again as I think it's easily something I could drink over and over, though stouts are my favorite style.

Mouthfeel isn't overly thick which helps a bit with having more than one.

Overall a good stout IMO and one I'll continue to purchase.

The Out of Bounds poured a dark black with a smallish tan head that quickly went to a collar that laced the glass. It has a strong aroma of roasted malts, coffee and lots of semi-sweet chocolate. It is medium bodied and tastes of roasted malts and some chocolate up front with a very bitter, coffee-like, dry finish. Overall, a nice dry stout. The hops are very bold, but not quite over the top.

Pours extremely dark. Looks pitch black until you hold it up to light and just an ever so slight of a touch of amber shines through. GREAT tan head that lingers around for the entire life of the pint.

Smells very roasty, robust, coffee, chocolate, caramel. Wonderful nose on this beer. Taste is more roastiness, rich malts, coffee...roasty flavors cling to your palette WELL after the sip is done. Great flavor. Finishes slightly dry with some hoppiness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a little thinner than I would prefer, perfect carbonation for a stout. Slightly dry finish. This is an extremely drinkable and pleasurable stout. I wasn't it to be this good actually because I remember being underwhelmed when I first tried it over a year ago.

Presentation: 12 oz brown bottle with no freshness date to be found.

Appearance: Astounding dense and rocky terrain of a head, a shade or two lighter than pitch black.

Smell: Faintness of licorice is mostly masked by a mellow charcoal and berry fruitiness.

Taste & Mouth Feel: Smooth and slick in the mouth with a medium body, solid yet lightly rounded charcoal flavor. Hints of licorice and a mild berry twang, a ghost-like minty and woody hop bitterness rolls with the growing char-malt character.

Drinkability & Notes: Quite robust for a smaller stout, hefty yet not huge. The long lingering roasted barley flavors really shine.

12 oz bottle pours a dark, opaque body with a short, tan, head that is shortlived, falling into collar and spiderweb lacing.
Aroma highlights roasted coffee, chocolate, and a note of anise.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with low carbonation and a slight, hops bite.
The taste is roasted malts, with coffee, anise, and bitter herbal hops. Some diacetyl slickness is picked up here. The chocolate promised by the aroma is nonexistent in the taste. Finish is hops bitter, with a coffee aftertaste.
A decent, dry stout, but not outstanding. The malt profile could be more assertive, but it's above average for style.

12 ounce bottle, pours black with a dark tan head, leaving well developed lacing behind. Nose of expresso and chocolate. Nice roasted and black malt character. Some sweetness in the middle. Coffee, chocolate, cocoa, vanilla flavor notes. Medium bodied and nice syrupy, sticky mouthfeel. Long lingering finish. Nice sweet stout.

Poured from bottle into tall wine glass.

Appearance- Almost pitch black, but can see a hint of light when held directly up to it. A vigourous pour leads to a surprisingly large light tan head.

Smell- Coffee and mocha are right up front. This is followed by a "barn" and barley smell.

Taste- More of a chocolate taste than in the nose. Hops and barley are much more prevelant than in the nose.

Mouthfeel- Too thin and much too watery for me. Has the feel of a light pilsner and not a stout.

Overall- Completely average...I only bought a single bottle, but if I would have bought a sixer, I would be upset. A pass for me.

12 oz bottle @ Hamilton's. Poured black with borwn edges, lots of creamy tan foam, nice lacing, even in the snifter. Roasted, nearly burnt malt nose, Quik-like cocoa powder, coffee and cream. Creamy mouthfeel, but a bit loose at times. Once this one warmed up a bit, the flavor really popped. Milk chocolate with a touch of Baker's, much smoother than expected coffee flavor, with a generous helping of cream. I thought this was a milk stout before coming ont his site. Slightly bitter hop finish with a charcoal/smoke/roast character. Very nice.

12oz bottle, no date, poured into a pint glass. The color is motoroil black and opque. The tan head rises to two finger, rather creamy and nice cap forms on the surface. Good retention and plenty of lacing coating the glass.

The aroma is dominated by roasted barley, malt, some charred wood, and bitter coffee notes. The flavor is the same, very strong with coffee, roasted malt, and hops on the finish.

The mouth is light, yet dries out, getting bitter and smoky on the finish. I wish there was some more complexity, more of a progression into the rather harsh finale. It's alright, but not one of my favorites from Avery.
