12 oz. bottle into a pint glass/ no freshness date

P: Completely opaque with 3 fingers worth of milk chocolate-colored foam on top. The head is packed impressively tight with a thick and creamy texture to it. Showed just average retention, though, before it evaporated to a thin halo while leaving some a little lace.

A: The aromas of this stout don't burst out of the glass and punish the olfactory receptors, but it smells better than I expected it to. It consists of roasted malts, baker's chocolate, more than enough coffee, a nice citric hop presence, and some mineral undertones.

T: Follows the nose for the most part with lightly roasted malts upfront that make me think Crystal is the most abundant malt here, followed by chocolate & black malt in that order, but who knows. What I do know is that they form a nice foundation while imparting flavors of cocoa nibs and a coffee flavor that edges more towards espresso than black coffee. Although, I seem to get a little charcoal bitterness from the slightly acrid edge that's gotta be from the overdone malts. There's lots of mineral notes in here as well as an herbal spice undercurrent, with some citrusy hop notes buried in there, too. Finishes very dry with an almost burnt, bitter aftertaste predominantly comprised of chocolate. It's called an Irish Dry Stout for a reason, it does have an almost dry chalkiness to it.

M: This is a medium-full beer with a slightly slick, slightly chewy feel that offers hints of creaminess underneath. Pretty darn smooth and drinkable!

Notes: This is a pretty decent stout if I do say so myself. It's got little patches of rough spots here and there, but it offers enough flavors to keep me interested over the course of a session. I don't know why I doubted the crew at Avery, but I just didn't expect much from this brew. I'm glad to say that I was wrong, and pleasantly surprised to say that I would drink this stout again.

A - Amber-dark appearance with a thick cream head. A bit on the light side for a stout.

S - Healthy, coffee scents with a bit of metallic edge.

T - Relatively empty taste for a full stout. Relatively bitter compared to what is to be expected of a quality stout.

M - Good, hearty taste but a bit on the bitter side (~45-50 IBUs) for a stout.

O - A notable stout. Definitely recommendable. Not, however, what could be had with similar brews.
