Poured from a bottle into a stout glass. Black in color with a quickly dissolving head that leaves lacing on the side. Smells like roasted black coffee and subtle roasted barley. Tastes like black coffee with subtle hints of bitter chocolate that works with the coffee taste. It has a medium body with light carbonation. It is thin for a stout, but not so thin that it is watery, with a barely noticeable hop flavor as swallowing. This is something that is probably very good on tap, but just good bottled.

12oz bottle dated 10/17/2014, poured into a snifter 2/5/2015.

A- Medium-dark brown body, nearly black. One finger offwhite head. Good retention time. Fair lacing.

S- Sweet caramel, roast, toffee. Earthy, floral hop aromas. Fair bit of coffee. Nothing too special, but comes with a reasonable amount of roasted barley.

F- Grainy roasted barley, a bit of caramel sweetness, some espresso, plenty of earthy hop flavours and a very floral bitterness. Nice complexity, plenty of roasted malt with a nice floral hop component.

M- Medium bodied, not too thick nor thin, nice depth of flavour. A bit undercarbonated for the s tyle, but sufficiently carbonated for enjoyment. Bitter floral notes on the backend.

O- Decent stout, the hops used in this is a bit different than typical American stouts, but the roastiness and hops come together for a very tasty if bitter combination.

Avery Brewing Company Out of Bounds Stout

12 ounce bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, pitch-black color with a quarter of a finger of caramel-colored head that quickly dissolved into a thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass and formed a few wispy clouds that collected in the center of the top of the beer.

Aroma: Wow! Big aromas of roasted malt, imparting notes of coffee and smoke, accented with some light licorice aromas too.

Taste: Wow!! Great, bold flavors of roasted malt, imparting flavors of toasted pumpernickel bread, freshly brewed coffee, without the coffee-like bitterness, a little smoke, a little dark chocolate, all followed by some brown sugar-like sweetness and some beautifully balanced hops. Delicious!

Mouthfeel: Slightly chewy, nicely complemented with some pretty good carbonation. With an ABV of 6.3%, there is no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: Damn, this is another great stout! Seriously bold flavors of roasted malt, beautifully balanced with some sweetness and hops! Absolutely delicious!
