Avery Brewing Company Out of Bounds Stout

12 ounce bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, pitch-black color with a quarter of a finger of caramel-colored head that quickly dissolved into a thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass and formed a few wispy clouds that collected in the center of the top of the beer.

Aroma: Wow! Big aromas of roasted malt, imparting notes of coffee and smoke, accented with some light licorice aromas too.

Taste: Wow!! Great, bold flavors of roasted malt, imparting flavors of toasted pumpernickel bread, freshly brewed coffee, without the coffee-like bitterness, a little smoke, a little dark chocolate, all followed by some brown sugar-like sweetness and some beautifully balanced hops. Delicious!

Mouthfeel: Slightly chewy, nicely complemented with some pretty good carbonation. With an ABV of 6.3%, there is no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: Damn, this is another great stout! Seriously bold flavors of roasted malt, beautifully balanced with some sweetness and hops! Absolutely delicious!

Bottling code of 14045B6 which translates to 02/14/14

Appearance - Pours near black with cola brown edging and a tan colored 2 finger head. Good retention, resulting in a thin layer of suds across the top. Small spots of lace cling tight, sporadically dispersed around the glass.

Smell - Prominent milk chocolate aroma with hints of roast in the distance.

Taste - Hmmm, much lighter than the nose would have one believe. Watered down chocolate notes and hints of stale coffee. More watered down flavor in the finish that comes through with a light earthy bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with low amounts of carbonation.

Overall - This stout has a promising aroma, but that's about it. The taste is a bland mess. Maybe 10 months of shelf life has killed what might be an otherwise great stout, but I'm not getting much of what might have been. Candidate for a re-review, but to be blunt my expectations with a fresher bottle isn't very high.
