Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a Duvel tulip glass. Batch No. 8 August 2011.
Appearance: Deep and hazy copper like amber orange with lots of bubbles sticking to the wall of the glass. Decent three fingers of off white head that fade into a patchy layer. Decent amount of lacing.
Smell: Strong aroma of caramel malts and bread with hints of toffee and citrus hops. Also some wheat grains. Hints of alcohol linger. Has a herbal tea like quality. Smells sweet and boozy.
Taste: Big taste of caramel malts with lots of bready sweetness. Some wheat grains and toffee. The malts are almost overwhelming but a fairly strong presence of citrus and herbal hops help balance things. Finishes with a moderate bitterness and a little booze heat.
Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a lower level of carbonation. Feels somewhat thick, chewy, and sweet. Has a mild kick of heat from the alcohol.
Overall: A very interesting take on a "imperial" Marzen. Very bold in both the malts and hops. Another Avery booze bomb that comes out pretty good.
