I love Fests but I hate beers that are overly strong for no good reason. I was in a good deal of suspense before I tried this "imperial Oktoberfest" without any real expectation of which way I would go. Ok, to be honest, I thought I would hate it. But I didn't, I really didn't, and I didn't find this to be anywhere near a doppelbock either. It's a true fest, with the tautness and suppleness of a light lager, and a healthy autumn maltiness that is respectably close to style. The hops are somewhat obscured, though, and one would never mistake this for the real thing. The drinkability sucks, for one. You can only take small sips; otherwise the alcohol chokes. A far cry from a true Marzen which, while being somewhat weighty in alcohol, demands being drunk by the liter in rapid succession. The beer had a good head and some nice lace; a humdrum, wine-y aroma; a solid malt backbone with lackluster hops; a pleasing, watery mouthfeel; and a deliberate, painstaking drinkability. It's worth a shot, and may be the ideal beer for Oktoberfest fans who are also raging alcoholics. But to most, it will be just an interesting experiment.
