The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of our friend Tom Boogaard’s grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart.

Our brewers included as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as they could, making this the perfect beer for folks who love malty beers and are ready to take the next step. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content.

The Reverend is the second installment of “The Holy Trinity of Ales” series.

Food pairing: Try The Reverend with a gyro or paired with our favorite: steamed spicy saffron mussels.

A: A crystal clear dark brown with ruby edges and a thin line of soapy tan bubbles on top.

S: Dark cherry and a little bit of banana and bubble gum with some toasted caramel malt and vanilla.

T: More of the same from the smell. Banana/clove with some dark cherry and an underlying toasted malt and alcohol flavor.

M: The feel is actually lighter than most Quads, and there is some smoothness to it.

O: A nice Quad. It differs from most in that it is a very sessionable Quad, which is rare. Dangerous in the fact that you don't get the big alcohol flavor and burn with the bold raisin and dark fruit. You could drink this all night, but you probably wouldn't make it too long.

Avery The Reverend Quad: This brew is like mixing 3/4 of a Double with ¼ of a Triple. Does that add up to a Quad? The body has a mahogany color, and while pretty dark you can see through it. Not much of a head forms, and that which floats to the surface is off white. What comes in the way of aroma is a mellow mix of malt and hops. This is the first Quad I have tasted, so I was not sure of what to expect. The Reverend comes across as a very good Double to me, with the sweet malt and roasted caramel flavors tempered with a Belgian yeasty and bready notes along with hints of piney hops. Very good!

Popped this bomber open towards the tailend of my night, so hopefully my sloppy jotted review isn't as crappy as my disposition was towards anything walking at the end of this one. At 10%, I wasn't feeling any pain.

A: Pours a lighter brown from bottle, but as those tiny brave little pigments start massing in the cup they turn a darker hue, near black. A bone white head finishes off the pour.

S: A real sweet aroma mixed with some alcohol presence. The sweet smell is of sugar, syrup, dark fruits. Quite bready with some alcohol coming through the nose.

T: You can taste the sweetness in a nice combination with the warming alcohol and yeasty bread. The beer comes together nicely.

M: Sweet and wet with an intense warming, I'm guessing caused by the generous alcohol content. This is a strong beer that can quitely defeat you.

The beer is clear amber, has a warm off-white head, leaving good lacing and curtains.

The smell is sweet, cookies with apricot, almonds, eggs, sherry.

Starting sweet cookie dough, caramel, dried peaches and apples, eggnog, almonds, sherry.

Medium low carbonation, small foamy bubbles, soft and oily, a smooth texture, a small dryness.

A very well done and worthy beer. Enjoy slowly.
