On tap in a tulip at Barley's Smokehouse on 6/24/10
Faded amber color with a copper twinge. One finger head. Almost no retention; good lacing though.
Simcoe & C-hops are loaded for bear in the aroma. Lots of pine & tropical citrus: grapefruit, tangerine & hints of pineapple. Smells zesty - quite nice. Faint malty sweetness. Dank aroma as it warms.
The nose suggests but doesn't fully prepare for the onslaught of hops & malts. Scathing pine digs right in & doesn't leave. Citrus notes are dense but seated under the pine; as such they are not particularly vibrant. Malts are more assertive than the nose; caramel, nips of toasted bread & biscuit.
Full bodied for the style. Slick with some alcohol heat. Underlying grittiness; kind of sticky, actually. Carbonation is appropriately low. Pine & a touch of sweetness linger.
Drinkability is fine, yet at 10% abv it's a heavy hitter. It's too hot, in my opinion. One is plenty. I'd been considering getting a bottle; I'm glad I held out for the tap.

This beer right here; this beer right here, man, this beer right here should be called def! Cuz it tastes so good that I tune out everything. (Somebody please tell me they got the Kat Williams reference). Anyway, this beer is really good! I love IPA's as it is, but this one looks so damn pretty, feels like water and tastes like some of Maharaja's gold. I would highly recommend it for, well...anything but a day in the sun. I encourage anyone google searching this reference while standing in front of a frosty glass cooler at Specs or Gabriel's or wherever, to go ahead and reach back into the cooler and add a necessary 8 bucks to your bill.

This is a very good beer, but I have had better. Maybe I have held on to this one too long, but it was a bit too malty for my taste. Although the bottle promotes the balance and "control" like a raja of both hops and malts. I feel like the malts are too intense for the beer. Well balanced but for the style I would say medium to high ratings.
Color: Dark bronze, but with some transparency, also a very low amount of head and lacing.
Smell: Not as intense as a West Coast IPA. Maybe that is my favorite style?
Taste: Balanced, I got this one on sale for a super deal so I figured I would try it, but I would not pay what the original price reflected.
Overall: A Solid beer, well balanced, not as much hops going on as I would like but its not a bad beer in any regard. But, to me there are much better in the same price range.
